And I'd hold off on the Toast initially...

... try using the built-in CD writing support in Jaguar and see if that meets your needs. I mainly write cd-roms, and it works fine for me. Also, iTunes can burn audio CDs. If you want or need more control or options than that, Toast has some interesting features.

Get GraphicConverter for $25 (Unless of course it comes pre-installed on your new Macs.)

It opens and saves to more file formats than I care to mention.

Came preinstalled on my dual ghz MDD :D
Dual 867 should have it as well.

It does. You get acrobat reader, Art Directors toolkit 3, chess, FAXstf X, Graphic Converter, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, PixelNhane, Snapz Pro X, and everything else that comes with the OS.

I agree that transmit is the best ftp program around. The built-in CD-Burning works really well for me and iTunes is killer for burning CDs.

But then, I still haven't jumped on to OSX. I am planning on getting a new eMac for my wife and she will mostly use it as a word processor. I don't know much about Appleworks, does it run natively on OSX? Is it good for most word processing (she's an aspiring author). What program do you guys recommend for this stuff?
