With my imminent purchase of a rMBP I've been looking at some of the add ons you can buy.

The Super Drive and Time Capsule products seem to have caught my eye.

Are there any essential purchases that make your life easier? Are the ones I mentioned worth it?

Thanks.

Nothing is essential. Even if it's essential to you may not be essential to me.

Like you said, Super drive as essential? Not to me.

Time Capsule? Not to me.

Magic Mouse? Not to me.

Everyone is different.

I travel a lot and it is essential to buy a sleeve. If you don't then that's not essential.

I have lots of photos that I can't lose so I bought lots of HDD to backup. You have nothing important so only one HDD is enough.

Use your common sense.

Again... I'm not asking for a lecture, I'm just asking what people found essential, products that I may not know about that I can consider. Of course, I'm not just going to buy everything that's suggested to me, what are you on? Honestly, some people really are a barrel of laughs round here.

A transparent hard case, im paranoid about the alumiium body. So i always use one.

And also moshi keyboard protector, save me from spills a few times.

Yea they are good suggestions. I am accident prone and the sleeve should protect the finish a lot longer. I want one of those vinyls too, some of them are quite cool.

I tend not to use any accessories.

I tend to use my portables as is IMHO it just isn't worth carrying extra stuff.

Additional power adapter. I travel every week and the last thing I want to do is plug/unplug the adapter every week. I leave one adapter at home and leave the other plugged in at my desk at work.

That seems like a costly solution to just bending down and removing the plug from the socket! :D

Ergonomic Keyboard and mouse (i.e. something not made by Apple). Rain mStand.

I know it sounds crazy, but having a second power adapter is one less thing to pack every week.

I tend to double-up on certain things - electronic toothbrush, extra long HDMI cable, exercise bands, phone charger, idevice adapter - that I have to travel with every week.

They're either always in my luggage or laptop bag and that means it takes less than 10 minutes to pack each week.

On top of that it's good to have a backup power adapter if your first one dies. Who knows when you'll be able to get to a store or shipped to Apple to get it replaced. You could be dealing with a dead MacBook at the most inopportune time. I'd probably add this to my essential list.

I think that's wise.

My list so far is a sleeve, a bag, a keyboard protector and a spare charger.

Sleeve and a bag? Isn't that overkill? Also, why a keyboard protector.

Are you one of those people who still have the plastic covering on their couch? :D

The sleeve protects the lid, to stop it from getting scratched, I need a bag because the only one I had is a huge one that I used when I rode my bike, the keyboard protector is to protect it from spills. The last one is a maybe.

I wear condoms three days after, just in case... ;)

There is nothing you need for this computer.

Flash drives are staple items, and I can survive without every accessory I have for it.

A good padded sleeve or case is good to have. An extra power adapter is good to have if you travel a lot. It's a sound investment since it also provides you with a backup.

I tried to make do with one adapter for 6 months. Then I left it at home one time too many and had to buy another anyway. Actually ended up with 3 for the same reason -- one each in the places I most frequently use my MBP. Not having to backtrack to retrieve it probably saves me enough in what would otherwise be lost work hours to pay for itself every month.

Like a good external display, they're actually a pretty decent investment because you don't have to replace them as technology advances. I'm upgrading to a new laptop after 3 years, but will continue using the 2010 power bricks (with new magsafe2 adapters) and my 8-year-old cinema display (which still makes the PC folks drool with envy) until they conk out or it becomes impossible to find adapters for the latest ports.

the first essential would have to be the protection plan, that thing saves your wallet and prevents a heart attack if something goes wrong post the one year.

Second essential if you do burn a lot of discs then the superdrive. Maybe thunderbolt external hard drive for back ups unless the time capsule is what you need.

Perhaps a screen protector would be of use as well.
To protect the screen from smudges and scratches.

People always say that "you can just use a cloth once in a while" to clean the screen but meh, better safe than sorry. Plus it doesn't add any bulk whatsoever if you get a glossy one (and not one of those anti-glare ones).

Well I must say that I do some casual gaming and Parallels desktop is not that expensive. I do have a Boot Camp / Parallels hybrid solution, that is that I install Windows as a BootCamp partition, then I mostly use Parallels to boot it up, but I can boot it up natively to get more performance.
