Hi all,

I've just purchased my very first Apple computer, a 27" iMac, and I am in the process of setting it up. This iMac is a replacement to a Sony Vaio PC that I have had for a few years, and to which my iPhone 4 is synced. I am now trying to get my iPhone 4 properly 'paired' to my new computer (and the new copy of iTunes that it comes with).

I've been reading up on this for the last couple of hours and there doesn't seem to be any definitive way of doing what I want; various sources give different answers and bits of advice, and I'm not sure what to do?!

I've consolidated by library on the old PC, and transferred to an external HDD. I've plugged that HDD into the iMac and added the files to the iTunes library. From what I can tell this has transferred all of my songs, apps, movies, podcasts and iBooks onto the new iTunes. So no problems there...

...what I'd now like to do is get my photos, contacts, SMS messages and the like, onto the new computer. I've turned the auto-sync function off on the new iTunes, as this seems to be the best thing to do. But what to do next?

Many people talk about plugging the iPhone into the new iMac, right-clicking on the iPhone in the left-hand bar of iTunes, and then backing up the iPhone to the new iTunes...but right-clicking on the icon does nothing (there seems to be no right-click option actually).

At a push I don't mind losing SMS messages, and I don't mind losing settings and scores in my apps, but my photos and contacts are very important.

Any help that you can give would be very helpful indeed. I bought the iMac as I was advised by many that they "just work"; so it seems odd that I should be struggling at the very first hurdle of making it work with my existing iPhone.

Thanks in advance,

Adam
