ETF plus returning iPhone?!

Hi all,

so I just moved back to Europe after 3 years in New York.
I have to terminate my 1 year old 3G iPhone (1 year on the AT&T plan) so I went to the Apple Store to see what my options are.

The guys there told me that I will have to pay the ETF and return the iPhone to a AT&T store. This sound ludicrous to me.
I asked him several times if he was joking.

Can somebody confirm that I can keep my iPhone?

You don't need to return the phone if you're paying the ETF. The Apple employee was misinformed.

Of course not - the employee you were talked to is an idiot. Just cancel on the phone or go to an AT&T store. The ETF comes on your final bill.

The guy was misinformed, you only have to return the device if you cancel within 30 days of purchase.

Yes it does. If there was AT&T service, then you wouldn't be roaming.
