I have the Apple USB to ethernet adaptor and it`s the same, heating up under use, given yours is the Thunderbolt version with far greater throughput it wouldn't surprise if it runs hot.
How is the performance with you USB - Ethernet adapter? Since I like to run dual external monitors using one display port for ethernet is not ideal. Using one of the USB 3 ports would be better, as long as the performance was OK.

The Apple USB-Ethernet adapter is only 100Mbps, while the Thunderbolt-Ethernet adapter is 1000Mbps. The Thunderbolt adapter is significantly faster. There are USB 3.0 to gigabit Ethernet adapters which will work with a Mac, though, as long as your computer supports USB 3.0.
