Hello there,

I bought a brand new Mac mini 2018 (i7 / 8 GB RAM / 1 TB SSD) yesterday.
Mojave 10.14.6

I cannot use the ethernet port. Even after "Renew DHCP Lease", removing the ethernet option and re-adding it, removing/reconnecting the cable and switching the network cable (Cat 6) it still doesn't work.

The same ethernet setup still works fine on my regular PC next to the Mac mini.

I only can connect via WLAN (same network) to the internet

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Wolfgang

Is your 'regular PC' also configured as DHCP or does it have a static IP address? If it is using DHCP and it works ok and the same cable doesn't work in your Mac mini then you may have a faulty ethernet adapter. The 'self assigned' IP address is the result of no response from you DHCP server (usually your internet router). You could also try setting your Mac mini with a static IP address instead and try to ping the default gateway.

Agree with FearGhost. The final considerations would be whether you have any security features on the router that might be preventing the new system from working, or other configuration quirks. Anything like MAC address whitelist? (Seems unlikely, as that would likely impact the wireless network as well.). Or as FearGhost suggested, any need to assign IPs manually that were designated in the router.

Otherwise, it sounds like you already swapped out the other variables... may need to get the system replaced by Apple.

In days gone by, this seemed to happen a lot. Once a self-assigned IP address, it's "out of range" of your router - which is probably using dhcp. Find out what range you should be in - check another device like a phone - and then use system prefs to manually assign an IP address, router address, and dns. Then, if that works go back to network pref and switch to dhcp. Reboot and you should not see this issue again.

Example: if your phone has an address of 192.168.0.5, then use the same number, but change the 5 to 200. Keep the first 3 number groups the same.

That said, I haven't seen systems behave like this in years. Make sure simple things like cable, or hard reset of router and mini are not the issue.

Hey there,

thanks for the quick and very helpful response! The router had an issue to establish the connection. I can't tell what exactly caused the problem, because the DHCP option was enabled by default.

Everything works fine now, I did a reset on my router and afterwards everything went fine.

By the way: Because you asked: My Windows PC also used the DHCP. Even my Playstation and TV were using the DCHP.

Thanks alot

Greetings Wolfgang
