For some reason the ethernet on one of my friends MacBooks (late 2007) model stopped working. He was using it fine for a day over ethernet then suddenly it stopped working. Strangely though in the network preferences tab it says its connected but no browser can load a webpage. Any ideas?

Check the modem. Is your friend's modem functioning? Can he plug in directly to the modem and access the internet? If so, it's probably the router.
