Description:
When using too many websites (Chrome), even an app like Google maps, my Mac will freeze and beachball. Sometimes the Bluetooth will disconnect but reconnects if left alone for a few minutes. Restarting helps but it takes a long time (5 minutes or more) but the computer is still sluggish.

Your iMac has a Fusion Drive (traditional HDD with a small SSD)
And a lot of installed crapware that runs all the time.

If you have a lot of free time: do a fresh install of macOS and see if that fixes it
If you have a lot of free money: Replace the fusion drive with a single SSD and see if that fixes it

As well as Fusion drive, your performance is severely limited by 8Gb RAM.

Cutting down the number of open tabs in Chrome (and preferably using Safari) will reduce the memory load.

But you will still be limited by your Fusion Drive. Easy solution (not need to open up the Mac) is to install macOS on an external SSD (the faster the better) and your system will be much more responsive.

You probably don't have enough RAM for what you're trying to do.
This makes the mac start "hitting the drive" with virtual memory disk swapping.

And you have a fusion drive, as well.

Do you have some other drives attached?
What are they?

I'm thinking that you might consider using a browser OTHER THAN chrome.
And... not too many tabs open (if you use them)... no more than 6, 7, 8.

And not too many apps open at once, either.

Flip4Mac WMV Plugin: 3.0.0.126 (? - installed 2012-12-20)

Silverlight: 5.1.20913.0 (? - installed 2020-05-29)

The last time I heard of Microsoft Silverlight is maybe 15 years ago. I also remember Flip4Mac from that time.

Can't even remember what both are, but I am pretty sure they don't exist anymore.

Edit: Silverlight was some video plugin like Adobe Flash, just came to my mind. Flip4Mac seems to be a Video player for Windows formats that was discontinued in 2015 or at least not updated anymore since then.

I would also say the biggest problem is 8GB RAM in combination with a 28GB only SSD combined with a 1TB HDD. For external boot drive I would recommend a Thunderbolt SSD to prevent auto-ejection.

I don't think auto-ejection is an issue for Intel Macs. Any USB 3 upwards drive will be an improvement on the Fusion Drive, but Thunderbolt for performance.

May bad, I thought the macOS version is the cause, starting with 11 or so.

I've read a lot of the "disk not ejected properly" threads because I have the issue (infrequently) with my Intel 2015 iMac. My conclusion is that it can happen with Intel Macs, and can happen with either USB or Thunderbolt external drives (the latter being my case). However, I don't think that it affects that many people, so hopefully it's unlikely to be a problem for the OP.

I'd try booting the OP's machine from an external drive, either USB3.x (10 gbps), if money is tight, or Thunderbolt 3, for better performance (and maybe better resistance to the "auto-eject" issue).

Sorry about the diversion re which disks are liable to suddenly eject.

Going back to the EtreCheck report and potential issues. Look at these and consider if comments apply (they may not) and whether you want to take action:

Disks:
64GB flash drive is very full (~0.5 GB free). As well as being very slow, the lack of free space will cause problems when it is being actively used. Dismount if not being used. It is, of course, a very slow device.

Malware: Do you need two anti-malware products? And whenever I have tried Intego (not for some time) it has consumed both cpu and memory. Consider removing Intego.

Old software which you may no longer be using and so should be removed:
Silverlight and Flip4Mac - already mentioned by others.
ProTech6: This seems very old. Remove if not being used.
fxLicenseManager: Is this old and no longer used?
divX: Do you need this? I can see a loaded background task as well as Safari extension.

Adobe: Are you using all your Adobe software? The background Creative Cloud and other Adobe tasks do consume RAM (as well as some CPU). Adobe crops up right through the report. Consider removing any/all Adobe software using the Adobe uninstaller - certainly remove all unused. I suspect you have a mix of newish (Elements) alongside very old (Reader 9).

Google: I guess you like all the Google stuff, but (along with Chrome itself) they do consume significant RAM. Consider reducing the number running.

Virtual Box: Looks like it is installed but not used? Or maybe mis-uninstalled. Consider uninstall and/or tidy up.

Startup items:
smcFanControl: How are you using this? To encourage fan use, or to avoid fan running. If the latter that will slow the CPU when it gets hot.
ProTech6 and fxLicenseManager (see above).

Login Items: Do review all these. Inn particular consider those loaded but maybe not used - e.g. PhotoStreamAgent, ClipMenu, uTorrent Web. Do you need Caffeine?

Kernal and system extensions:
You have a lot of unloaded extensions. If from old software they should be removed.

Internet Plug-ins:
Some these are very old (Flip4Mac, AdobeAAMDetect, OVSHelper, PhotoCast, AdobePDFViewer) Review the need for these and remove.

What is actually consuming resources whilst running EtreCheck:
Chrome helper is consuming 32% (of 1 CPU) and 1.5GB whilst Chrome is presumably idle because you are running EtreCheck.

Overall look of it:
There may well be lots of stuff which is not longer actively used. Also the system has been upgraded for many years - installs going back more than 10 years. Looks like it is time for a clean install. Consider a clean install - i.e. Make sure you have good backup and know your software license details, erase disk, install macOS (no Migration Assistant), install wanted apps from their downloads etc., recover data files, photos, etc from your backup.

If it were me I would do the clean install as part of moving to an external boot disk (USB 3.x or TB).

The whole thread was 5 years ago and does not appear to be related to recent threads about "auto-ejection" of USB 3.x (but not Thunderbolt) drives on Apple silicon Macs.

I have had a problem with external USB SSD's unexpectedly dismounting on my 2018 Mini. Doesn't happen a lot, but it's definitely a thing on Intel (for me, at least). Here's a recent thread

OTOH, have had a new m4 Mini for two months that runs 24/7 as a media server, all my files are on an old USB3 4tb external SSD. That disk has never been ejected unexpectedly yet.

Download a copy of DriveDx (the demo version will do) and check the wear levels of the SSD portion of your Fusion Drive. As you can see from the report you posted, it's a tiny 28 GB, and the whole time you've been using the drive, your active files have been read and written back and forth from that SSD to the HDD repeated. I think it's a fair bet it's worn out from all those cycles.

In my old 2014 iMac 5K, the SSD part of the Fusion Drive got hammered to death with wear (and it was a comparatively generous 128 GB SSD.) In the end I had to open it up and replace the SATA HDD with an SSD, which bought me another year or two of usage.

Unfortunately, any Fusion Drives still in active use at this point are ticking time bombs and should be regarded with suspicion. Apple used absurdly small SSDs for these things, and the way they work just puts a ton of wear on them. And then there's the matter of the HDDs, which are another point of potential failure.

Nice concise summary and also suggest upgrading the RAM especially if the system is already going to be open to replace the internal drive. 8 GB is not a lot these days even if just web browsing. Might as well take advantage of that feature on the hardware where it is possible. At current parts prices, might as well go to 32GB (and while likely overkill from a needs perspective, 64GB is only ~ $60 more in parts over 32GB).

Though 5-6 years old now this is still a good system. The only drawback is the lack of T2. Which some may consider a feature but I do note from another thread Intel Macs with T2 are actually competitive with (in some cases actually faster than) even recent Apple Silicon at hardware H.264 encoding (and not terribly slower at H.265 encoding). In any case even if Apple drops the last non-T2 Macs with the next macOS update, this system has got a good 2-3 years left in it (assuming all the above is addressed).

Not obvious to me that it refers to auto-ejection

I chose the earliest example that I could find to document that the problem has existed for a long time. If you do an extensive search you will find hundreds (?) of posts about the problem over the years.
