So was Siri at one point, but they "opened" that up to allow third party access.. As well TouchID/FaceID as well for other apps to implement.

perhaps i'm confussing "restriction" with "locked"

It's NFC is locked, they can unlock it, give it time..

Even Thunderbolt was once "Apple" only, but now others make certified cables too.

Lets wait and see, the EU might be a party in this case, Apple may be forced to open NFC in the EU.

Let's first ask and consider what NFC really provides:
Quick bluetooth pairing (before iCloud with W1/H1) chip.
Android's tapping to share your contact, LMAO 'tap, tap, tap and tap' - sorry we have AirPlay a much better solution. Heck even sending over Bluetooth was better than using NFC to share your contact by tapping. Idiocy!
* Anyone with an NFC reader can steal much more information from a phone/laptop that has it's NFC sensor operating and listening for a contact. There have been a few specific texts done from 2016-2018 on this - very ALARMING results (google this).

From the point of Apple I'm sure it's about security. It's also THEIR device, THEIR OS, THEIR ECOSYSTEM ... this is not anti-competitive it's THEIR choice. Having a license to use a technology can also be called 'anti-competitive' yet essentially it's up to the license holder to be a) willing to sell it to competitors/clients and b) competitors and clients to sign up test and follow said guidelines of use. Example: FireWire 400/800

FireWire 400/800 ... the first being used only drive manufacturers and Sony in their laptops and I think 1 Vaio desktop! FW800 had more external storage and digital audio component manufacturers license and sell products. No other computer manufacturer licensed it. The market won out with USB3 and FW400/800 died!

using NFC is WEAK: Apple is choosing not to implement that technology for their reasons. Many of their users /customers may not need/want NFC while others may want it (such as yourself). At the end of the day ... yes Apple can make apps for it nobody else on THEIR device. Apple HAS worked with a handful of city transit establishments to have NFC used for digital transit cards and now in US Universities for student badges.

I disagree.
It's not their device, I/we bought it so the device is mine/ours.

You can't compare NFC to Firewire, Firewire was an Apple invention, NFC is a NXP invention.

I do understand the security issue, but I also do understand anti competitive behaviour and so does the EU.
Things work differently in the EU, the consumer has more rights, for good reasons.

how does Apple make money off Apple Pay? If they take a cut, and Apple card takes another cut, and MasterCard/Visa takes a cut...thats too much cutting for the retailer.

Apple gets a cut from the bank. Although I suspect it may not in a lot of cases.

The original intention was that a "true" Apple Pay transaction to be equivalent to a Chip-and PIN transaction. Now most places that advertise Apple Pay do not implement that standard, but view it as a straight Tap, subject to the same limits.

how does this benefit Apple?

It depends in how the contract with the bank is written. But I know that in it's current form, it is easier to pull my credit card than my phone. Because for anything approaching $100, NFC may not work, so I just use C&P.

I think it's just the EU regulators doing it's job... btw, i don't mean that Apples won't approve your app, it could mean delaying the approval, etc, etc... shenanigans that other big companies have pulled.
Now Apple probably doesn't do either because it's a waste of time, and they don't need to if they think they got a good product.

Intel (I believe) got busted in the past for delaying shipments for buyers that were wholly committed to Intel. Google got accused of de-ranking companies that don't spend on AdWords, etc.... The regulators still have to do their jobs and have to look into all the complaints or questions against the big companies and can't just go on reputation or appear to play favoritism.
Thats literally never happened. We got our app approved almost immediately every time there is a release with no Apple Pay.

what’s the difference between Apple and your bank in this case?

The difference is that apple has refused to let companies to use nfc through their own apps. Banks own applications are for them of course to do your daily tasks. Only way to use nfc was(?) to use apple pay - someone said above that apple has opened the nfc now so i need to check it and let my bank to know it if is true that it is not anymore bound to apple pay.

Software run both these things be it the operating system or an app. What’s the difference?

Apple has opened the NFC, for example to the MTA but don’t know if it’s open wide enough for the EU. Anyway EU good luck in getting apple to do what you want.(whatever that is)

I made the choice to buy Apple products and with that I accept there may be limitations to what I can do. If there is something I don't like I get over it and move on. If at some point I can't get over something I'll move on.

I am not going to be the person that buys someone product and then bitches that it can't do this or that. If you don't like something change brands.

Would anyone think of complaining to an auto company that there navigation interface should be open? The manufacturer has no obligation to accommodate your demands and neither does Apple.
