The worst thing about this is the multiple plug types that people have already brought up. I can’t thing of the last time I threw out a charging cable after switching phones. I still have my 2 USB c cables after switching to an iPhone because they are useful.

What I do throw out are 5 charging adapters that click into a charging brick. It’s become pretty common for charging bricks for smaller items to have no prongs, then have a bunch of localized adapters that click in. My lifx light is never going to be used anywhere outside of my house and the handful of charging adapters it came with are almost universally thrown out (saving for the one that you actually need).

HDMI Thunderbolt 3 USB all possible with Type-C Apple was a big player in the Type-C development and Lightning was only created as at the time Type-C was not yet ready now it is on all Apple laptops and on some iPads they is no reason for it to be used on all.

it gives out 5v 9v etc... it PD it’s the way forward.
Apple has no excuse they simply trying to milk lightning as Type-C opens the door.

Tim is all about profit $pple

While I would like to see USB C implemented on the iPhone, I don't think legislation is the way to do it. And given that I rarely plug my iPhone in anymore, I'm not overly concerned about this happening. However, there are a few of your items that also need to be unpicked.

Politicians aren't getting involved with technology, they are just mandating that standards are in place.
Yes, technology standards; hence they are getting involved in technology. Just not the development of it.
Which was my point in saying that politicians don't decide how the standards are implemented and change over time which is incorrect. Standards bodies do that.
Just because you cannot imagine needing a connector smaller than USB-C, doesn't mean there isn't a need. And it's not just about size, maybe a different connector will have higher bandwidth, or some other feature that will work with future technology better. But companies will still have to include usb-c on their devices. Advancement will now be happening at the speed of government; great.
If you make your connectors dumb they are more backwards compatible.
As to the bandwidth, what makes you think the connector will stop a given bandwidth?
Yes, we will be stuck with usb-c. The politicians didn't vote for the standards of usb-c, they voted to force the use of the usb-c standard. Companies no longer will have the choice of usb-c, lighting, micro-usb, magnetic induction, etc., and let the market decide. The market will now be stuck with usb-c.
Politicians don't set the standards, bodies do.
What are the other 46 connectors that your devices are using that all require their own, different, cables?
When you have been around a few years you tend to accumulate all sorts of charging cables from different devices, each one that little bit different.

Once, people couldn’t’ve have imagined all of Mozart’s works stored on a rectangle the size of a fingernail. It’s not about what you can imagine today.

Once you get down to a certain size generally the connector gets weaker

Oh good riddance to Lightning. I knew that name checked out when I accidentally touched the loose cable lying around on my desk and got pricked with 5 volts. Nothing harmful, but sure as hell unpleasant.

Because some idiot thought that exposing pins with voltage on them was such a freaking good idea.

USB-C is surely nice, but I'd vote for good ol' barrel plugs, just to spite Apple and its lobbyists.

Another issue with going Qi charging only. If the battery is completely drained, it can no longer charge with Qi. I've just had a Pixel 3 (dev device) sitting on a Qi charger for 3 hours, and it hasn't charged at all. It's a dev device for when I do Android development and it hasn't been used in a while so it was completely dead. Had to plug it into a cable for it start charging again.

This legislation will likely backfire. One of it's stated goals is to reduce waste, but the easiest answer for Apple will be to just include a USB-C to Lightning dongle. Most people won't use or need it, so it'll just be extra waste.

Is that a pixel 3 issue? My iphone has been completely dead and shut off a few times and I've just placed it on my Qi wireless charger and it has charged just fine.

More EU garbage. This is what you get when countries are so weak they can't do things on their own and have to join a larger union. 🤣

Are you saying United States of America is bad thing? Should US just split up? Decisions like these and power of the union is what makes EU great. Fighting for consumer rights and forcing companies to make consumer friendly choices is just one of the EU benefits. In what world is a unified charging cable a bad thing?!?

So, gonna lug around this sucker to charge your iPhone? Cause that’s what’s required for your MacBook Pro

Only if I'm also lugging a MacBook Pro. In which case I no longer need to carry an iPhone or iPad power supply as well.

MacBook Pro 16 charger = 96W
MacBook Pro 13 charger = 61W
MacBook Air charger = 30W
iPad Pro/iPhone 11 pro charger = 18W
iPad = 12W
iPhone = 5W

...and many people have 2-3 of those that they frequently carry together - now they only have to carry the charger for the most power-hungry item. The switch to USB/Lightning charging also means that you can often overnight-charge a higher-powered device from a lower-powered charger. Its more flexible for users, stops companies like Apple gouging people on spare chargers/cables and - at a minimum - reduces the number of 'spare' chargers people will need.

there's no reason any future ports can't be the same shape and compatible usb-c. Look at the improvement from usb 2 to 3 using the same shape port.

Another great thing from the EU that I really hope the UK adopts. I'm fully ready for a usb-c only life.

You do realize this is exactly what everyone said not that long ago about USB-A. Could you imagine a world where legislation dissuaded / prevented anyone from bothering with making USB-C. USB-C may seem like the "future" now, even desirable, but you won't feel the same way in 5 or 6 years, and these laws will still be on the books.

I can't recall agreeing with so many postings' on a single thread. Apple has been pushing USB-C down our throat for quite some time. Apple fiercely defended the USB-C standard on the MacBook line of devices, and yet now, they're resistant to that same design strategy. I've been waiting for Tim Cook to provide some explanation, on the off chance they have a better mouse-trap on standardizing the process. While wireless charging is the future, it seems to be in its infancy and a far cry from the mainstream.
