What is remarkable is that all those ports went to the dustbin of history without government regulation.
Yeah and the reason was that it wasn't as profitable to license them, but MFi is a cash cow for Apple, they wanted to milk it for as long as possible.
I remember how many different cables I needed in the past it was insane. Today, realistically you could go USB-C everything. I really don't want go back to worrying about different types of cables.

Sure , but where does it stop , who decides what is the future ? if the EU can decide what ports companies will use , maybe the EU can make DX12 a mandatory API for graphics , thus making MS share it with the world , it would be great for the gaming industry if everyone used the same API for game development , making games for different API`s PS5 , Nintendo , PC/Xbox (only 2 that share for obvious reasons) , Mac , Android , its all so distributed !!! that way we would get gaming on Mac over night !!

Once you make everyone use the same thing , nothing new will be developed in that space as there will be no market to sell it at if countries just block it.

Part of what great about capitalism (it has soooo many downsides , dont get me wrong) is that endless competition to be on top , beat your competitors on the business side but also on the technical side , telling the tech world that we basically ended the competition for cable connections is a sad day with a very bad precedent.
I am totally against this being enforced by law. Adopted as a standard by industry consensus until something better comes along is where it was heading anyway so the law is kind of pointless. USB-C probably has the better part of a decade of life left until something surpasses it. However, I believe this law will entrench it longer than its useful life and the market would naturally allow.

I really like the USB C ports over the older lightening, but this kind of law making is really stupid and smells of socialism at its core. These are electronic devices outdated at some point, so let the market determine what is best.
Nothing to do with socialism. EU member states are a mixture of right wing and left wing governments.

The market has already decided that USB-C is the right way to go, and Apple has been playing catch-up.

And? What's your point? Government must intervene because a company makes money on a charging port? Sad times...

Imagine defending a company's right to make and sell the products they want as long as they don't create some outsized harm to health and safety. Should Apple switch their phones and accessories to USB-C? Yes, I think most consumers would like that and it would be good for their business. Should they be forced to by government regulation? No.
PR Apple: We're at Apple care about environment and we do our best to limit our impact on the planet.
Real life Apple: We keep selling MFi licenses and force our users to buy new lightning cables for select few of our products.

Yes, companies should be regulated, because the ONLY goal of a company is to make money.

I'm now tossing up is it worth getting this years iPhone or wait until USB-C is implemented in 2023/24?

Probably better to wait as this will be the last iphone with lightning port. I was gonna buy the 14 pro max to my wife but she'll stick with xs max for another year

Apple is not doing this to preserve MFI revenue. Otherwise the Macs and iPads would have never used USB-C. Apple committed to about a decade before another port change on their devices and that time is about up. USB-C was coming to the iPhone regardless of the EU passing this law.

"Apple's filings show that less than one half of one percent of their revenue comes from the entirety of the MFi program, which includes not just the first-party cables they make, but every single licensed iPhone-compatible accessory of any kind anywhere in the world."

All they did is force companies that are lagging behind to implement a superior standard instead of outdated proprietary port.

catch up ? they basically were the first company to have any products that uses it (intel designed it and Apple used it) .... you are forgetting the threads about the move to thunderbolt and type C , if we had the EU deciding we would have those microUSB as our standard that cannot be replaced , as it was the dominant connector for phones for a while.

Macs and iPads combined are nothing compared to iPhone accessory sales. This is why they switched ports in those devices earlier.

I guess by 2024 we will have a USB-D or some such and Apple knows it. ;)
My bet is that USB-C is here to stay for a while because unlike USB-A or USB-B, USB-C is a 'smart' cable it can negotiate power delivery, transfer data at 40 Gbps etc. and I bet 40 Gbps isn't even a limit of this port.

It is? Explain. And help us understand why many many many standards have come about and evolved without legislative mandates.
The EU has a website that describes how it's involved in standardisation.

We have had many many standards that have harmed the environment, increased manufacturing costs or inconvenienced end users and businesses. The above website has a page that describes the benefits of standardisation.

The fact that, by law, I can buy an electrical appliance in the EU and ensure that it is certified compatible with other devices is a good thing. It's why I can safely plug things into the mains and use a phone charger that won't kill me.

And this is the proper role of government?
Who decided superior?
Who decided outdated?
Sandals are not superior to athletic shoes. They are outdated forms of footwear. You now support legislation that requires companies to stop making inferior footwear. This will protect consumers and keep sandals out of landfills.

Those USB-C conversion dongles (shown above) to Lightening are unsafe around small children. They look like Chiicklets chewing gum. Try finding one somewhere in a piece of furniture if it falls out of a pocket.

Apple's best solution and stiffs EU is wireless charging using MagSafe. Just close the cable port.

Great stuff - I hope they have a means to switch to a new standard in the future, once technology has moved on

Forces users?! Are we all incompetent toddlers? BUY SOMETHING ELSE!
You know what, you’re right! Let me just change my entire digital life and habits over my gripe with a cable that’s going to change in my favor next year. God you are SO smart! That is a sane and rational action that only a competent adult would make, right?

It's not about limiting future innovation it's about forcing companies to catch up to the new standard instead of using their proprietary connectors. You can bet that if something better comes up in the future it's going to be like USB-C - open and for everyone to use.
