European countries without Apple Pay

The terminals in Belgium are always combined NFC and old school debit/creditcard terminal where you need to enter your pin, so they're on the counter and easily accessible. 🙂

Also funny is that the iPhone/AWatch are way faster than the terminals. So you pay, the watch will confirm the payment and you obviously lower your arm, the person in the store will look at you all confused and then 2-3 seconds later the terminal will start beeping and print the ticket. Fun stuff.

Do you actually believe that the watch confirm the payment before the terminal has processed it? That would be a great oppurtunity to get stuff before actual confirmation has happened...

The issue is Europe is that we have had nfc here far before apple had apple pay and US was still using checks. Not only nfc but other mobile transactions as well. The problem is not that there wouldnt be terminals, they are on everywhere! The real problem is that Apple wants comission from every transaction made by apple pay. Banks here are not interested in paying apple for using apple pay when they already has their own nfc payments etc - just one bank has accepted apple pay in my country, others have said that they have no interest to add apple pay. As long as apple dont open the apple pay for banks own application i dont see it used widely here. And as long as apple pay has been here, it isnt got any better because banks dont support it, unless apple stop asking to get commission to use it. I could use apple pay if i use my credit card but why an earth i would pay anything with a credit?? Showing phone to the terminal? Not any faster than showing my bank card to the same terminal - probably even faster than trying to place my wrist (watch) against the terminal...

So Apple wanting some fee is bad for a secure and private payment system that they designed which is ot free, but what they should do is open NFC for poor banks, so they can avoid fees and add more of their own fees and mine user data. Essiantally double dip. Yeah, makes total sense.

yes, they could let banks to use their own application via nfc and not force them use apple pay. thank god, banks are not such a sheeps here!

just tell me a one reason why banks should pay commissions for apple? banks already has their own secure online banking etc. They do NOT need apple for that.

Because that's not what people want and because it's a better implementation anyway.

I read somewhere, maybe even here, that Apple asks 0,15% fee from every transaction.
If customers do payments for €1 million, bank has to pay Apple €1500, which is nothing.

Nobody really knows what fees they negotiate. Might be no fees at all in many cases.

No, but when you stick in your old school bank card, you have to wait for the terminal to confirm before you can remove your card. The Apple Watch/iPhone says it's paid and you can remove it, wait 2-3 seconds and then the terminal confirms and starts printing. I mentioned this because it's fun to see the cashiers face when you say you've paid yet the terminal looks like I haven't.


On the "why should banks pay Apple" subject;

If Apple would open up their OS and let us choose what payment app activates when I double press the lockbutton, then we can reopen the discussion, but since only Apple Pay can be used without unlocking your phone...

I use Apple Pay because it’s more secure. No more card skimming, card details leaking and wallet being stolen in a metro.

Indeed Heineken, I forgot the extra security layer Apple built in. The vendors never get any personal data from you as Apple Pay generates a new temporary card every time you pay.

When the "Hold Near Reader" changes to a checkmark all that means is your payment details have successfully been communicated to the payment terminal.

Actually you haven't paid into the terminal says you have, or you receive a Push Notification from Apple Pay or your bank or both. In most cases this notification does occur before the terminal has received its authorisation and confirmed your payment has been processed.

But that first bit is not an indication that the payment has been successful.

The amount banks save not needing to reimburse people after their cards got skimmed or wallets stolen should be enormous.

i dont hold it anymore than 1-2 sec when it says ”checking” and then take it away - checking happens without you keeping the card on the terminal, atleast here they work like that.

if i use apple watch, terminals are many times on the position that i should angle my hand somewhat oddly. terminals has been there long before watch payments and the position is for watch payments is not the best position.

dont know where are you living, but the implementation isnt any better than it is now. contactless payments have been here where i live very long time and apple pay doesnt offer anything new. because nfc and mobile payments have been here for a long, banks have done it well and hence they arent interested in paying apple to anything for what they already have their own.
 
Cool. I live in such a hypermodern country, that the Payment Association says it is not necessary to have Apple Pay activated in here.

I live in The Netherlands, where we like to think in ‘added value’. The Payment Association says there is no added value to Apple Pay.

Should you want to pay with your phone or watch, then buy an Android. Because we are the Payment Association and we will decide what’s good for you: there are so many alternatives, we don’t need Apple.

I would even pay an extra fee every month in order to use it. I am pretty sure Apple Pay will never be introduced here. We will simply see countries third-world countries have Apple Pay (whereas Apple has no market at all), before we’ll have it.

Please don’t refer me to bunq. I am not keen on putting my money into a ‘bank’ that has just one investor, who happens to be the owner who funds the whole bank from his own private money.

Most people who haven't used Apple Pay don't see any added value in it.
All of my friends who've used it now, only wished we've had it sooner.

I'm glad to see Austria joins the club. I'm rooting for the Netherlands 🙂
