EVE like game -- but offline?

I was on an Amtrak today from Boston to NYC, and saw some kid playing an EVE-Like game on a UMB... but without an internet connection.

Any ideas what that game could be?

Second for X3... Although I've been having problems playing it on my iMac.

I looked up Homeworld 2 as I loved the original Homeworld, but I can't determine if it's UB or not. The demo certainly isn't.
