Yeah, it's now on Engadget too.

We have yet to receive official word on this, but All Things Digital is reporting today that Apple's next big media event will be held on October 4th, where freshly minted CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5. Sources close to the situation say Cook will be the main presenter at the event, with execs Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue playing supporting roles. This would mark the first time that Cook has actually led an Apple event, adding an extra wrinkle of significance to an already highly anticipated occasion. The site's sources went on to say that the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase "within a few weeks" of the announcement, though All Things Digital acknowledges that the exact date of its unveiling is still subject to change. As always, we'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as we hear more.

Remember All Things Digital is in bed with Apple. It's articles are always slanted in Apples favor & have been for years. David Pogue & Walt Mossberg are always the first to get the latest Apple products way ahead of any other writers. Apples strategies have always been brilliantly executed & the sales volume reflects it.

It is the 10th anniversary of the iPod.
iPod was originally announced sometime in october.
And iPhone is basicaly a hybrid/glorified iPod, this makes sense.

If this is true, I wonder why 4th instead of 5th. Surely iPhone 5 + iOS5 on 5th makes more sense.

Anyway I am guessing this is correct as All Things D & WSJ apple "rumours" (i.e. controlled leaks) are usually spot on.

If you know anything about the current Apple they don't give a **** about anniversaries.

When AllThingsD says an exact date, that's the date it will happen on. Apple feeds them information; they also were the first to announce the iPhone 5 in October rather than September.

Went to sleep last night thinking today might be the day for invites..woke up upset after reading this news. Especially the "available within 'weeks'" of the announcements

me 3.

This blows. At this point, I don't need "rumor or expect to announce".
I NEED real date coming from apple themselves. Seriously dudes.. wth.. wtF?

Wow. This is just getting odd now. So no announcement of iPhone at the past Big Event. Now no September event either? What is going on lately? Apple has got to be having some serious software/hardware/manufacturing issues to have to keep delaying all this.

So that would make it 34 days from Beta 7 to GM assuming the GM comes out at the keynote. I wish it would come out this Friday as rumored and then a public release at the keynote. :(

How can it be delayed if it was never officially announced? It's not like this is the white iPhone 4 where it was promised by Apple but later delayed.

With a reputation of being "in bed" with Apple this is IMHO the most solid clue as to when all this may go down.

This is a good thing. :apple:
