It's not unreasonable. But Evernote has definitely been struggling to put out updates that aren't buggy. I'm using Quiver a lot more these days, and Notes. The power of EN is the web clipping.

I migrated all my personal notes to Apple Notes and my work notes to OneNote this morning. I've loved Evernote for years, but there is no reason to pay for something I already have several times over.

Evernote email to paying customers: "We'd like to reward our users today with a new pricing structure and some changes to free subscription policies. As a way of rewarding our loyal, paying customers we are announcing today that we are shouting a big "SCREW YOU!!!" to our free subscribers who have been taking advantage of our servers. They will no longer be able to sign in to their account on more than 2 devices. This is mostly because shareholders judge us by how many emails we have registered, and now everyone will start registering 2 or 3 or even more emails so they can still have their notes on all their devices. Money is literally all we care about. Thank you."

Evernote email to free subscribers: "Just so you guys don't feel bad about our new policy, we are also shouting a big "SCREW YOU!!!" to our loyal paying customers. We are almost doubling our subscription prices. Please let them know, we are too embarrassed to tell them ourselves. So many stupid announcements all in one day. Ugh why did they make me send this email. I hate my life."

How do I import notes into OneNote on a Mac?
You don't. The migrator only works on Windows. I did it on a VM and it worked fine. You don't have to install the migrator, and don't need to have Evernote or OneNote installed, so just export your Evernote notebooks and do it on a friend's computer.

Evernote is pretty good but I haven't see much in the way of new features over the last year, and some really important stuff has taken steps backwards. This is going to break them.

Anyone remember the days of Springpad? I miss springpad. It was free and I still think it was the best, but then they shutdown and I switched to evernote. Guess Ill stick to Apples Notes for now. I dont find One Note user friendly and the less Microsoft stuff I use the better.

I think I might look at migrating elsewhere. There's been a bit of news this past year on Evernote and to me it suggests they're not doing so well. I think I'll get off this ship before it sinks.

I migrated away from Evernote when their windows app was getting uglier and uglier. Went to OneNote and couldn't be happier. Good riddance. Lots of good note taking solutions these days to deal with the Evernote shenanigans. I logged in a few months ago for the last time to migrate my notes out.

a two-device limit I think is going to cost them a lot of customers.

That's only for free accounts. They're not customers yet. I had to remove one of my devices from Evernote to fall under the 2 device limit. Evernote is nice and I would pay for it if it had more robust task tracking and calendaring tools. It's elegant and simple software, but for people like me who don't use the team capabilities, there's just not much to it.

I love barbecued unicorn.

Just bought Quiver. It's ..... AMAZING. Put all my Google Keep notes on it, my Google Docs on it (copy/paste from Google Doc to Quiver works even with images ). It's handling thousands of notes like a champ - I have it on Google Drive so I can "sync" it to my Macbook Air. I'm absolutely impressed. Love the idea of cells. Love how I can copy/paste images. Love how it's just plain text with so much power - exactly what I want. Love how I can attach anything.

This is my new notebook app I've waited for, for so long. Can't wait for the iOS app.

I tried installing OneNote today to see if it can replace it. What a joke !
Terrible ergonomy, the Safari "Share" extension only allows you to clip entire pages and only as an image, not as text. The Safari extension clipper only allows you clip section as images , not searchable text, and on top of that, I just get a constant "Content not available yet, try later" on the OneNote app, despite the webclipper calaiming "Success !" . Even getting help on OneNote is a nightmare, more than half of Microsoft help pages on the matter lead to "error 404" inexistent pages...
I completely deinstalled it. It's almost hard to believe how bad it is, at least on Mac.

I had similar problems.

I have a copy of Windows installed on my Mac through Bootcamp so I was able to use the OneNote importer to transfer my content. That went well.

I then switched over to Mac OS and started arranging my notes, making use of the sections feature in OneNote.

It was when I started using the Web Clipper that I had problems. I added it to Safari but it wasn’t working. After about 10 seconds a message would pop up saying that the page couldn’t be clipped. I tried uninstalling the Clipper and reinstalling, but it then said my browser wasn’t supported.

Eventually, after clearing the OneNote cache in Safari (File, Preferences, Privacy, Details, Remove), signing out and back into OneNote and One Drive, I was able to get the Web Clipper working.

Notes were still taking ages to sync to OneNote. The title would appear in the app notebook, but I would get a message saying, "This page isn't available yet. It was added from another device that didn't finish syncing. You'll be able to use it when that device syncs.”

I went back into Windows, loaded either OneNote or One Drive, and noticed a PC attached to the account. It was on the lower left-hand side and had an ID starting WIN7. Presumably this was the ID of my computer in Windows which I had only used because it supported the importer tool. I removed this from my account and signed out of both OneNote and One Drive in Windows.

This appears to have solved the problem. When I went back into Mac OS and started using OneNote again, I have not had any issues.

Lol really? It's just a note taking app, I'm amazed they have a subscription fee in the first place.

People have been programmed to think that subscription fees for everything is perfectly normal these days (especially young Millenials who have been convinced that subscription music streaming is the the way to go) …. people would pay a small (third-party) Weather App to get them to pay some $50 annual subscription fee. Of course it won't ask for $50 up-front as that would seem like asking for a lot. Instead, the company will simply say like "For a mere $4.25 a month, you get access to our wonderful Weather app all year round!"

What next? People will pay $9.95 annual subscription just for a smartphone Calculator app?

Or even further, we rent music, we rent movie, we rent any app. After that, we rent smartphone, we rent tablet, we rent all electronics.
We are already able to rent house for a shelter. Then we will rent furniture, home appliances. We literally rent everything. Even, I can say we are renting the world for living.
This is a weird but not entirely wrong mindset.

I think I'm just going to settle with Apple's Notes for now...

OneNote doesn't need to clip as text because it has a powerful OCR engine which recognizes and indexes text and handwriting from any content you add.

There should be an expectation that you are going to have to learn how to work with a new software with any switch; that doesn't make it bad. Personally I find OneNote's UI far more intuitive than Evernote's. YMMV.

OK, I'm close to pulling the trigger on this. Questions:
  • Not a programmer, so not the primary demographic. I assume this doesn't matter?
  • Any ability to web clip? What if I wanted to save an image from the web? How about an entire web site? (The fact that Apple Notes does not do this is the main reason I don't go there--simply providing a link does nothing if the information disappears, and necessitates opening a browser).
  • How about capturing audio when in meetings?

Sigh. Maybe DevonThink? I'm still lost on this one.

I'm a programmer but I didn't get this for that reason (though I plan on using it to store code someday, maybe). I got this because I wanted a text based notepad and it serves that purpose perfectly.

Copying images from web? Just right click, copy, and paste into Quiver - works perfectly.

Full on website clipping, doesn't work - but I rarely do this - I usually copy a lot of links and share via email - so full web clipping is a negative for Quiver. I used to use the Google Keep Chrome Extension that allowed me to, in one click, save the website I was on for easy access later - I may still use it.

You'd have to use another program to capture audio - I use my iPhone or iPad with Voice Record Pro - I cannot use my Macbook Air because it never gets the audio loud enough and I type fast enough and loud enough that it isn't clean audio (Notability). You can attach anything to a note, so you could later attach a voice file to a note - that's what I plan on doing.

I used to use Day One for my "daily logs" but I disliked how it stored my data on their servers and only let me do 10 pictures per note - with this, I can do far more and store it on my Google Drive and "sync" it to my Macbook Air from my Mac Mini at home via Google Drive. I'll be using it as a Notebook primarily.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate the time you took to answer. :)

I didn't realize it, but they have a free trail off their website, so I'm going to give that a shot and see if I can work it. The fact that many of my use-cases are either not covered or fiddly is a little concerning, but the fact that it's just dropbox and go is extremely attractive. Might be worth coming up with a workaround or two.

Honestly looking at Evernote, my main uses are swiftly boiling down to web clipping anyway. I'd use Pocket or something for that (and I do) but a permanent archive costs nearly as much as Evernote, and I don't want to go there. I used Evernote a lot more when I had the storage under a premium plan, and I think Quiver would handle that use very well. I'll toy with it and see what happens. Again, thanks for the information.

By the by, I still use Day One, and have been for over three years daily now. Even though they sorta miffed me by moving off dropbox for storage, the software is pretty incredible for journaling. The little extras like auto weather, GPS, "On This Day" feature, etc completely make it. I couldn't leave that one anymore. :)

Definitely recommend Evernote for web clipping - it is AMAZING with what it can do - and Clearly - I used that all the time back when I was an Evernote user.

Day One is amazing and I'm still on the fence about it - I've uninstalled it twice and reinstalled it. lol. I just can't make up my mind. The features you mentioned are what keep me coming back.

If $25 more per year is a problem for your budget, I recommend making some dramatic changes to how you use your time. It sounds like you like going to the gym, if you can apply the same dedication to making more money, you'll probably find many of your problems melt away. I think this is the best place to start for that mindset shift: http://www.dangerandplay.com
The cost isn't a problem for my budget at all; it's easily afforded if I want to do so. As someone else replied to you about my post, its more about value to me. I'm happy to pay the $45 per year for the service, but with the increase I need to re-evaluate its usefulness to me vs. the new cost. I already have an Office 365 account for which I pay for and it includes OneNote and integrates with Office and OneDrive which I use.

When I say I use Evernote heavily, the term is relative in that I use it more than I use my other productivity apps I have. My usage of Evernote is probably not heavy at all compared to how others may use it. Regardless, I have found Evernote to be a wonderful app that I use and like very much. But I don't feel the $70 per year is a valued service I'm willing to pay for any longer when I have other, comparable, services available to me.

I was thinking that maybe the solution is to simply save web sites as PDF, drop them in a folder and have Hazel add them to Quiver via script. Dunno if that would actually WORK, but it'd be pretty sweet if it did. The web clipping is really the only thing I'd miss. Although I STILL use Clearly on my work PC. Apple's built in is good enough for me for that when I'm in my preferred ecosystem. Part of the goodness of Evernote is cross-platform, but it's not that important to me if I can use the magic of dropbox/Hazel. ;)

Day One gets better the more you use it. If you're an occasional diarist, then I can see where anything like Evernote or Quiver or Apple Notes or whatever could work for you. If you write daily, then a dedicated program pays back in all sorts of benefits, and there's nothing better than Day One that I've found. FWIW, when they implemented their own sync solution, I asked them outright if they were planning to go SaaS, and they told me the basics (create an entry with photos, and unlimited sync of those entries) would always be outside the realm of SaaS. They suggested they were looking to monetize in the future more through publishing options, etc. So it SHOULD be a safe platform unless they're a bunch of liars, which I doubt. :)

People have been programmed to think that subscription fees for everything is perfectly normal these days

Yeah, I'm really tired of all of these subscriptions. I thought about this recently, even before the Evernote announcement. Compare what the average person paid per month or per year in subscription fees 25 years ago to what people pay monthly or annually for subscriptions now. Then: cable TV, newspaper, a magazine or two, maybe a gym membership. Now: digital cable TV with a thousand channels you don't watch, DVR service, HBO, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, cell phone with more GBs than you even need because god forbid you go over and get raped on overage fees, Sirius Radio, Sirius Traffic, OnStar or its other-brand siblings, more iCloud storage and/or more Dropbox storage, Apple Music and/or iTunes Match, Office 365, Crashplan or some other backup, maybe the same gym membership, this, that, and 500 other things, but admittedly probably not the printed newspaper or magazines anymore.

There's so much subscription bloat that you really need to look at these monthly charges and decide if each one is truly worth it. Evernote may be worth it to some people, but it's not to me. I'm trying to reduce subscriptions, not add another one.

I was fine with the free version of Evernote up until the new 2-device limit, since I've recently purchased an iPad Pro and can write with Apple Pencil directly on my notes.

OneNote (imo) is not as good overall, and to those that are fine with Apple Notes: A comparison with Evernote is a joke. If Apple Notes, or even Google Keep, fits your note-taking needs, you were probably underusing Evernote anyway. I actually use Google Keep myself for "quick" notes, whereas my bigger-project notes are handled on Evernote.

$35 for the Plus account. Sad when people complain about $3 for a quality app. I'll be paying and look forward to what Evernote can do with more financial support.
