Evernote Offering Automatic Document Scanning With New 'Scannable' iOS App

Evernote today released a new iPhone and iPad app that adds scanning to its repertoire of available services. The new Evernote Scannable app debuted last year as a beta service and is now publicly available in the iOS App Store.

Similar to competing scanning apps, Evernote Scannable includes an automatic scanning feature that allows users to scan a document simply by launching the app. Upon launch, the app will locate the document in the camera's field of view, initiate the scan and sharpen the contents to improve image quality.

Once scanned, the document can be uploaded to Evernote in a format that makes it searchable. Alternatively, scans can be uploaded to iCloud or shared via AirDrop, text messaging or email. If the scanned document is a business card, the Evernote service will automatically associate the scanned information with the contact's LinkedIn account. The new Scannable app also will serve as a controller for the ScanSnap Evernote Edition Scanner.

The opening butterfly animation is a pretty nice touch. :D

I'm actually amazed that they're treating this as an entirely separate product. No Evernote login, and you can pull it in to whatever.

Yeah, it's very snappy, maybe a little too much IMO. It was trying to grab all the books on my desk as I was moving the phone around, haha.

The iOS Evernote app seems pretty slow to me. Part of it is the UI. For example, it takes up to 5 taps to navigate to a "shortcut" note. It also feels laggy in general, but maybe that's because I have 6500 notes.

I've been using Readdle's scanning app. This one looks really nice, but I've never used Evernote.

Good for Evernote users, true. Very quick and efficient.

I've used a few of these scanner apps and found Scanner Pro by Readdle better with Autosync to iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, Evernote and WebDAV, my preferred app.

Another plus for Scanner Pro. Scanned my boss's notepad yesterday as asked and he was impressed at the clarity.
I've got a scansnap ix500 for the post now, and in fact I'm finally putting my trusty 3 year old Doxie on eBay this weekend as ScannerPro has taken over as my ad-hoc scanning solution.

My biggest use of the evernote app itself is taking photos rather than the doc photo - usually when we're in a shop and my kids say "I;d like that for a present" so it goes into the "wants" notebook. Makes Christmas & birthdays so much easier when asked by family what they would like!

I have Scanner Pro as well and really like it. This new app is even quicker, but so far it sacrifices a few things that I use, like the ability to give a title to the document I am scanning before uploading it, unless I am missing that somewhere.

When you take the shot, it appears at the bottom as a gallery. If you click on it, it'll bring up a page and at the bottom it'll have the title you can click on and edit.

Seems significantly worse at recognizing what is and what isn't paper, compared to Scanbot.

I've only used the new app a few times, but I just always try to make sure there is good contrast between what I want scanned and the surface it's laying on. That's just a habit of mine.

I tried scanning a notebook with more yellow-ish paper, and it had a very hard time recognizing it. Not all of my to-be-scanned are single sheets of flat, bleached paper.

Scanbot seems to recognize the general square shape though, and will much more readily snap a photo.
