What works for me is to use Mindnode for spider diagrams, and pages/Ommwriter for notes. These are all saved into my Dropbox folder so I have access to them all the time. Works for me..

I've never tried Circus Ponies Notebook but I've heard it's good :)

but i want something free as well..
Why is that so important? It costs money to make software, and to test it for quality, and to run a stack of servers to host the files in the cloud, and to pay for the internet connectivity for the stack of servers. So either you pay for the software, or you pay for the service, or you watch lots of ads, or you get an amateurish program written by a college student.

If a good quality product is important to your productivity, why is it so hard to part with a few dollars for it?

The Op did not want something that uses the cloud.

There is also tons of great free software. Linux, Firefox, Chrome, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, AVG, Avast, CCleaner, Cobian Backup, Picasa, &c. None of that is amateurish much is superior to the paid products.

My friend, I did not say that free software is bad software, what I said is that "free" should not be a requirement. All the things you mentioned aren't good at taking notes.

As for the other "free" products, look again: Many of them come from companies who want to sell you an upgraded version or sell you something else. Only Linux and Mozilla products are truly free. Every engineer at AVG knows that they are giving away a product in order to market and sell their products; they depend on it to pay their rent and buy groceries... and there's nothing wrong with that at all.
