If I do a restart of hard shut down, I have to reboot from MAC APPS via the internet. My machine is an early 2008 with 2.8GHz quad core. 10 GB of memory and 3 hard drives - the original, one with 1TB and one with 2 TB (partitioned as two drives) Started with the 10.5 OS, then upgraded to 10.6 Had a major crash in December and had things restored at a MAC service center. In mid-February, OS started to again crash. Fortunately had all important files on the other drives, so I reinstalled 10.5 then upgraded to the 10.6 and then eventually the 10.10.2 Since then, the 10.10 has crashed so often that I do not shut down the unit; just let it sleep. If this subject has been discussed, please excuse me - new to this site. Also, please do not get too technical should you reply. Old fart that I somewhat technical savvy. Thanks, FB

What kind of crash are you referring to? Kernel panic?

Open the console application in the Utilities folder and see if there are any crash logs that have been generated. This will give you an indication of what might be the issue.

Utilities log - looking for crashes

Taz, thanks for your reply. When I go to the UTILITIES folder, there are 15 listed log names. Each one has an extensive report. Is there one particular folder that I need to look in? Your help is appreciated. Thanks, FB

Can you post the crash logs using something like pastebin.com. Before you post the crash logs try these things, try shuting down for each item tried:
    • Create a new user, reboot, login to the new user.
    • Repair permissions from Disk Utility application in /Applications/Utilities folder.
    • Boot into safe mode, hold down shift key while rebooting.
    • Reset PRAM, hold down CMD-OPTION-P-R while rebooting, let it reboot 2 times while still holding CMD-OPTION-P-R and release when you hear the second full volume bong sound.
    • If above does not work, press OPTION key, select "Go" from menubar, select "Library" from the list. This will open a finder to your user Library folder. Drag the folder "Caches" to the trash. Reboot.
If none of that helps, post the crash logs using pastebin.com.
