Under Safari>Preferences>Privacy, I selected Prevent cross-site tracking. When visiting everymac.com I received a pop-up that said:

Blocking ads? We understand. However, the majority of the ads on EveryMac.com are from dedicated sponsors and aren't even animated. We have done our best to not allow tracking on network ads, too.

Please become an EveryMac.com Supporter today. Plans start at only US$5/month. If you do not support our advertisers or the site directly, EveryMac.com very well may not be here the next time you need it. Thank you.

I just let ads through on that site occasionally and click a few of them. So, they get the higher monetized click through than a view provides.

I can't imagine where they get the $5 a month though. For an ad free version. There is no way they are getting close to that in advertising per person. Except maybe someone who is on that site all the time. $5 per year seems more realistic.

Even Facebook which gets way more usage per user. I also expect far better view an click through advertising rates. Gets about $3 per month per user. If you look at the average monthly user divided into their yearly revenue averaged per month.

That seems to be a problem with sites that offer a paid ad free option. At least the ones I've paid attention to. Always want way more for ad free. Than I can ever fathom they earn from the average user who sees the ads. Not that I've looked at many.

The heck with EveryMac.com and any other site that seeks to manipulate visitors into paying.
Yep. Gone are the days when I surfed the interwebs for information. Now days I find most sites to be ad-ridden festering piles of crap. There are only a few sites that I’d even consider turning off my adblocker for. Oh well, it’s turned me towards more and more book reading which ain’t a bad thing I guess. At least I don’t have a full page advertisement every half page.

I don’t get how sites expect me to pay for content then blast me in the face with ads.

I agree. I go to less sites on the web because of being pestered about cookies or using an adblocker.

"Prevent cross-site tracking" does not sound at all the same as "Blocking ads" to me. They absolutely should not need to track users just to run ads. Sounds like Everymac needs a new ad system.

I pay for two online national newspapers, and I’m getting very annoyed at the ads. In fact I often use Safari (with blockers) vs. their apps. I get it that there is no free lunch, but since I’m paying for a subscription keep the ads throttled back a bit

The initial poster is mistaken.

EveryMac.com does not participate in cross-site tracking. As even quoted in the initial poster’s message — “we have done our best to not allow tracking on network ads" — the site has gone as far as disabling Google’s cross-site tracking in countries where Google makes it possible to do so, etc.

These same messages have appeared on EveryMac.com for many years, but they do not restrict anyone from reading the site. Messages do not even appear to the majority of users who block ads, either. Messages are designed to only appear to those who are blocking ads and who have been reading the site for several minutes longer than average.

These users tend to be using the site because it is helpful to operate their businesses. Some users who visit EveryMac.com in conjunction with operating their businesses find the site valuable and are happy to pay to support the site. Some visitors choose to support the site because it makes them money or because it has saved them time and money for decades.

In recent years, EveryMac.com even has reduced the amount of network advertising. As noted in other messages, if users support the site directly, it will be possible to further reduce network advertising.

EveryMac.com has supported the Mac community for nearly 25 years now. If you choose to support EveryMac.com in return, it is appreciated.
