Seriously. I've been waiting so long for the new Apple TV, I've just become fully accustomed to my LG TV's built-in software. Still, when this product is finally released, I will switch over. But I've been saying that for years now...
They need more than phone games for that to work. And nobody wants to make those. Also, that’s a Mac Mini.
Yeah, when you can just plug in any fast and well supported gaming console into another HDMI port the motivation for a new such platform from Apple seems slim. Apple's big draw is the overall OS and ecosystem neither of which plays heavily in gaming.
Probably not anytime soon, but they will definately discontinue it someday.
Once those new holographic projectors take over this Apple TV device will be toast. Any day or decade now.

Kinda glad I picked up a 128gig 4K 3rd gen before the prices went up. The newer base 4th gen here is $265 from Apple. ouchie.

Apple's absolute lack of consistency with ATV updates is beyond frustrating. I held off purchasing since November last year as I needed 6 at work, but finally had to order. I didn't want to purchase ancient hardware, but sometimes you cannot wait any longer.

Honestly, I think it’s dead. They can’t compete with anyone in this segment. Plus the Apple TV app and AirPlay now work on basically everything. Their new homehub smart speaker combo thing will likely take over.
Curious what you mean by "can't compete"? I haven't found a streamer that works better.

Can’t compete in price. No one outside of enthusiasts will pay for more than a Roku or Fire Stick, if even needed.

Oh no, they still lag. Most I’ve used are anywhere from fair to terrible. But from what I can tell, people just don’t care anymore. Most are used to crap service and hardware from cable companies, which are even worse.

I’ve always said that I think Apple missed out on having tvOS as actual TV operating systems, built in. All of the other major players have done this (Google, Roku, Amazon), which has worked out very well for them.
Everyone I know who has TVs with these OSes built in just use them… because they support everything they could want to watch.
It's a fair point. I am on the other side and always plug in an Apple TV.

I used to use them exclusively (pre 4K) but stopped later on. That said, if a TV series actually had tvOS built in, and was competitively priced, I would buy those TVs.
Curious which TV brands have these built in. I have a few Samsung TVs and their built-in app support seems to be their own proprietary OS.
I would as well. I know Apple has high prices, but their stuff is quality. An Apple TV (actual TV) could be amazing.
