I doubt that sudden shutdowns are 'on' by default in this beta.

Because Apple has been moving away from prefixing everything with an 'i' for a while now. iCal became Calendar, iTunes (on iOS) became Music, iChat (on Macs) became Messages, iPhoto became Photos. Other 'i' apps died of natural causes (iDVD, iWeb, iSync). New hardware and software 'categories' were launched without the 'i' prefix (Garageband, Apple Watch, HomePod).

Why would they do that though?

Why would they do that though?
Because that technique (prefixing an 'i') was becoming old. The name of something is like design, it is how that something presents itself to the world. Occasionally these parts need refreshing.

Sometimes what a name references looses relevance. For example, originally on the iPhone, the Music app was called iPod because it replaced the functionality that a standalone iPod provided. But the idea that music = iPod has faded as the iPod has lost relevance, thus the app was renamed Music.

  • A better way to access Control Center on iPhone X. I think having it to the right in the app switcher makes sense. It's in the app switcher on the iPad.
They could make the right-most 'tile' the Control Center, but to fully access it, this would add an extra tap and a half compared to the top-right swipe (swipe app, hold for a split-second, tap on the right-most tile). For some people that extra tap and a half might be worth it as they have trouble reaching the top-right corner but for many others it would be a step backwards and thus it should only be added as an additional, alternative method.

I'd add a 3D-Touch icon on the lock screen to activate Control Center (right in the middle between the 3D-Touch icons for flashlight and camera). But this naturally only solves the problem when you are at the lock screen.

I just have to wonder, cynically, what existing things they're going to break when they intro all these new features.

I recall doing this back in the jail breaking days. I like it. It gave the pages a nice clean look.

Then again there were times where I was sitting there thinking “wtf is this icon”
What's odd to me is the fact Apple got rid of the names for the dock, but not the rest of the home screen. Looks strange and inconsistent, not very Apple like.

Yeah, and I think that's why they added those buttons on the X. I use the camera and flashlight most of the time when I access control center. For me it's enough of a pain to access control center at the top that I would prefer an option to have it in the app switcher. Then I could just swipe to the left on the home indicator to get to that right control center "tile" quickly.

You're right, from within an app, accessing Control Center via swiping the home indicator is an elegant, fast operation. Add the 3D Touch from the lock screen and it is only the home screen without a quick method to access Control Center.

They could use the same gesture on the lock screen. What annoys me is that reachability doesn't work on the lock screen. Alternatively they could replace the swipe for camera to be swipe for control center, as there is already a dedicated camera button. Luckily most of the time I need to access Control Center from the lock screen is to use the flashlight, so that's covered by the button.

I’ve long held the opinion that the app labels should be omitted altogether. At a minimum, the User should have th option to toggle the label visibility off. Most apps are easily recognizable by their logos. The freed space could allow for larger icons, as is demonstrated by this phone’s hack...

The problem with that is that many of us launch apps via spotlight rather than hunting for icons which may not even be visible at all. So we need to know the names. And some apps we use rarely have names that we don’t remember (eg, what’s that guitar tuner app called??).

But sure, it could be a configurable option: let the user choose.

-iBooks - The iBooks app has dropped the "i" and it's now known as just "Books."

Oh be still my beating heart! How does dropping an "i" in iBooks improve this app?
