Something hilarious with my current version of spotlight search is it can’t even find Apple’s native map app. I recently wanted to give it a try after an update and didn’t know what junk folder I threw it in. Pulled down spotlight search and typed ‘Maps’ - all that comes up is Google Maps 🤣
Did you delete the app?

Nice improvements and moves to replicate Google's search on android phones ala 7 years ago.
Lmao!

Google Search took years to be able to search words within documents, in pictures, in email, etc. spotlight has always been this powerful since 2000 in macOS X beta. Google wasn’t even on desktop at that time. Nice try.

I wish they made it easier to get to Spotlight when you're not on the home screen.
I wish they'd let us save a search like Smart Folders on macOS. Particularly in Mail and the Files app where I'm often looking for emails from the same person, domain, or subject.

Could be that Maps was removed from "Siri and Search" Go to Settings —> Maps —> Siri & Search —> Show App in Search. Had the same thing with a handful of apps not showing in search and at some point "Show App in Search" got turned off for it.

has anyone actually ever seen AppClips out in the wild?
I went to a restaurant in Philadelphia and they used App Clips to process payment. It was just a QR code on the receipt they brought to you, so I could securely pay via Apple Pay without having to install the restaurant's payment app.

Minor comment to say that myself appreciate a lot these quick rundowns of incoming features. Sometimes discovery is either not there easily visible, undocumented or just plain too lazy to dig it and learn it.

Potential useful tip, as I also live by swipe down and quick search EVERYTHING (also on iPad, but there it’s easier thanks to cmd space like on Mac when a keyboard is attached):

On accessibility settings you can put double tap on the back of your phone to trigger some actions, including Spotlight, allowing it to launch it even while out of the homescreen. I use it everyday now, I have never seen it autotrigger after months of use either.

Suppose you want to add a quick value at some bank bills payment app: double tap, type a basic math operation, swipe it out, continue, recall it at any time again (in case you forgot part of the number or need a new one) by physically double tapping with your finger on the back of your phone.
This is amazing
Bless you

Spotlight Search has increasingly become a competent search engine that can stand on its own.

It started with showing search results served by other search engines but Apple has chipped away at what it can find on its own. On iOS 16 Beta, I no longer see other search engines, only Wikipedia, Pinterest and other common sources of answers to search queries.

To be at full competitive par, Apple cannot rely on Google. People have suggested that means Apple acquiring DuckDuckGo but I think Apple is nearing being ready to ditch Google with its own system.

When an answer cannot be found, Spotlight Search does refer you to a Safari window that brings up your default search engine. A web version of Spotlight would fill the rest of the gap.

The pull down search has been my first stop for search for maybe 3 or 4 versions of iOS instead of in a browser. By putting “Search” right on the Home Screen, it seems like Apple thinks it’s ready and encouraging regular users unfamiliar with the pull down screen to search with Spotlight first.

The advantage to search on device rather than in a browser is that it can consolidate all searches including your own content, which in many situations is the most relevant answer. This search result really impressed me:

Searching Elvis pulled up a random photo of my dog in front a tv playing Elvis. 🤯

Who is coming up with these awful designs?
I can already easily swipe down on any home screen to get to Spotlight. Why do I need an extra button? Especially one that covers the dots so you can’t see what Home screen you’re on and do that horizontal swipe gesture to quickly navigate between the screens.

Does this idea come from the same team that added swiping on the lock screen for Spotlight, the feature that causes you to accidentally tap on apps and actions? You know, the same issue the original team solved from day one on iPhone OS 1 with swipe to unlock?

Sorry for venting but I was also fighting with the iPhone’s autocorrect on the same sentences over and over while typing this. Apple’s software has gone so downhill since iOS 13…

I love the double tap, I use it All the time also use it for Siri. I use to live by the swipe as well, but I double tap on Siri and she opens up anything ( no swiping anymore ) scan your face and your done ( no more trying in those crazy google passwords either)

And they let you just leave like that? How do they know you actually paid when u just get up and leave?
I’ve no idea on that score, and I’ve wondered it before. I’ve never asked, but assume there’s some notification system in place.

It’s been confusing to me at some places, where there will be both the QR code option and a server who will accept payment.

Finally a legitimately compelling reason to use this accessibility hack. Thanks for the advice!

I live by the search bar. Quick swipe down and I find my apps. Not a big fan of the search bar at the bottom.
Button is definitely good for one handers, and I was trying both, and the button was much faster. When I swipe down, there is an obvious delay compared to the button.

Must be on the register or something. Most places we go either do the kiosk or the QR, and we just leave once paid.
