This would be great for trips.

Apple should have a mode where it only takes the phone charge to 80% and just keeps it there till the battery case is depleted - so it doesn't keep your phone battery pack at 100% (which is bad for battery capacity life).

Yeah, the ideal algorithm would be, with both starting at 100%:

- Deplete phone battery to 80%
- Switch to battery pack. Deplete battery pack to 0%
- After that, start depleting phone from 80% down to 0.

This gets both batteries to 80% as quickly as possible.

Good that it exists.

Though I have to note that I've had this phone for 3 hours during which I've played back videos, taken multiple photos and it has downloaded my entire app-library in the background.. and I haven't seen the battery indicator budge even a little!

<snip>

I use mapping software in the back country where satellite service is all that's available, and though there are charging solutions when I'm out for a multi-day trip, and radios-off extends battery life, I sure don't mind the sound of yet another way to extend that battery life!

Yay I say.

Any chance that the rumored “reverse charging” feature could be included in the smart battery cases, instead of the phones themselves?

Beautiful, as always. Hope they are south of 250 USD, I wouldn't like that just anyone can afford the same as me...

I’m gonna wait for Mophie to release theirs next month

I got a Smart Case for my 7 back in the day and that case they destroyed my battery. Would die way quicker. Never again

You can't trade in the Smart Battery Case; mine's less than a year old so I hate to have a useless case if I upgrade to an 11 Pro Max soon.
Is the new 11 Pro Max thicker (heard conflicting information) ?
If it isn't, I'll use a razor blade and simply enlarge the camera cutout.

Yes, my 11 Pro Max won’t even slide into my XS Max Smart Battery case. It’s wider and thicker.

I was just able to slide my Pro Max into my XS Max battery case. Worked fine except it covered one out of the three lenses, flash and microphone! The volume buttons don’t quite align, but I was able to click them just fine. I am trying to decide if I should cut the camera opening wider as I really liked my battery case on the XS Max.

Great News. Too bad Apple couldn’t get it’s act together to ship these at handset launch.
Apple waits a little while to stock their battery cases because they don’t want to give the impression that their brand new iPhone batteries aren’t sufficient. Bad optics.

I buy the battery cases for vacations and business trips where I’m using the phone for extended periods of time. I’ll test out my new 11 Pro for a while first.

They're not going to sell a lot of those cases, but some people like to have extra battery life during a trip or a very intense day so it is good to have that option.
I prefer a battery pack so I can use it for my phone or my wife's, it is bulkier and needs a cable but I only seldom bring it with me, so it is a good tradeoff.

Definitely looking forward to this. Hopefully the pro max battery life will be up near the old “plus” battery life a few years back, but even then I needed an external battery for certain trips. And i really like the design of the smart battery on my xs pro, so I imagine this will be similar.

What’s the difference between a battery case and a smart battery case?

This one is smarter than most. You plug into its lightning port and it charges both the phone and the case, intelligently, etc.

Maybe it will be different from previous models and use this thing call bilateral wireless charging so you can have direct access to the lightning port on the phone. and use BT, NFC or UWB for communication.

just remember if/when they come out with that you saw it here first ;)

Please release now! I play Pokemon Go non stop here and that game just eats battery non stop!!

If my XS Max case will charge my 11 Pro Max I will reuse it. I didn’t keep the case on long term before. I would have it with me, put it on to top off the phone then swap back to my thinner case. I could use a portable battery for that but thought at the time I would use the battery case more. With the size and weight, I just could not do it on a regular basis. Looking at eBay my sales price will be a fraction of what I paid to buy it. So, if I can slide it in the case, top off, then switch back I will use it for that purpose. At least while its in there I can still put it in my pocket and use the display. The camera and volume buttons can be lived with for the bit of time it takes to charge my phone.
