It would be very interesting to see if some form of less-complex skeuomorphism returns with iOS 26. Some parts of iOS 6.x's skeumorphism is actually very well-designed and their return in a less-complex form would be highly welcome.

Wow! That design is absolutely beautiful!

They should go with that one!

We said the exact opposite 10 years ago, hence we're stuck in a loop.
What's this "we"? I certainly was not. As with most instances of it seeming as though 'everyone' is complaining 'all the time,' it's generally two separate groups, each displeased with the other's preference. Those with no taste were whining incessantly throughout iOS 1-6's tenure and the rest of us have been whining ever since (albeit with different goals in mind).

Pretty surfaces, exteriors, and visuals can only be fully enjoyed when what's UNDERNEATH the gloss is functional. Apple has a LOT of work to do to make their software and first-party apps enticing and satisfying to the end user. So excuse me if I'm not doing the two-step over a few pumps of cheap perfume sprayed on a fetid dung heap.

This image is exactly why I'm not 100% sold on the glass interface. Look at the tab selection options at the bottom: in this image, it's not immediately clear whether the Years or All option is selected due to the background colour in the image. If you spend 1-2 seconds looking in more detail, it becomes clear that it is the Years option, but why should people have to do that extra visual check?
Isn’t that from a render from one of those leakers?

I agree with you here, but I’d trust apple designers on this.

Already I don't like the new OS and I have not even seen it. Being visually impaired, it is a problem. What ever happened to simple and easy to see ? Gone. I tried the Vision Pro over a year ago and was unable to complete the presentation . Got Sick. Oh Well. I had better like the new OS, or else.

Collective we, as in, a global trend. Skeuomorphic UI was largely deemed dated and everything flat was amazingly fresh & new.

Again, you and I have personal stances on this, but it doesn't matter in what the global trend is.

iOS 7 in 2013 was all about flat UI, which has been standard since then - and we're tired of it now, so we need a new trend.

Looks like a glass version of Aqua.

By the way, this isn't full skeuomorphism, which is where UI elements mimic real-world objects, like a notepad app that looks like a yellow legal pad, or the original iCal that resembled a paper calendar. Aqua and this glass design do mimic real-world buttons and some other elements/objects, but full skeuomorphism takes this further.

Here for a glassy sort of Aqua 2.0 UI and hope it looks good.

I also hope they consolidate some of their parts of the OS like Notification Center and Today View, for example.

And why is there a giant holding an iphone 3?

We’ve kind of forgotten how tiny the early iPhone models were. I’ve still got an iPhone 5 in a drawer somewhere and it’s crazy how small, thin and light it is compared to modern models. Of course, the screens were tiny too…

The designer's "Living Glass" concept treats all UI elements as dynamic glass surfaces that reflect, refract, and respond to their environment, so buttons cast realistic shadows, reflect bright content, and exhibit properties like surface tension when merging together.
So is this like Bob's project Erasmus from a few years ago? He kind of pioneered the first working demo of that.

So with the emphasis on translucency for UI elements, every UI element will look different at different times depending on the background it's on top of, which will be bleeding through every element? This might make the UI completely inconsistent, even incoherent in many situations.

I hope Apple doesn't remove the options to turn off translucency/transparency. This would allow UI elements to still look like glass, "reflecting" light, but only on their surface, rather than all the way through.

If this is true, you can be sure it will be used by bad actors. If the translucency is "big" enough, you could positions pictures exactly where buttons will pop up and make users click the wrong thing...

It looks pretty good but I'm more concerned with how it works. Lately Apple has been really bad at releasing software with good UI and even worse at releasing software without tons of small annoying glitches and bugs
