Granted nobody knows the exact performance differences of this unreleased iPad 4 and the A6x, however speed tests between the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5 are ridiculously close. Sometimes the iPad 3 loads faster.

I just googled speed tests between these two devices and was surprised at the results. I assumed that the iPhone 5 would spank the iPad 3 due to the faster processor and the much fewer pixels it is loading up. That is just simply not the case.

I thought that with the new wifi dual bands, at least web pages would load faster on the iphone 5. This doesnt really seem to happen always either.

This makes me seriously doubt the real world difference of this A6x. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like Apple might just be doing whatever it takes to boost sales this quarter.

I will be very interested to see real world comparisons once people get their hands on the new iPads. I also wonder what real world battery and heat tests look like with this new chip.

Right now it just seems like a pretty meh update. Great for new iPad owners but not worth upgrading for current iPad 3 owners.

You were probably looking at the graphics benchmark comparisons where the A5X matches the A6 in the iphone. The A6 still beats it in geek bench scores, which tests everything, not just the gpu. The A6X will have twice the gpu power of the A6 since it is a match with the A5X gpu, but since the A6 is twice as fast as the A5X cpu wise (geek bench scores), the A6X will double its performance all around. This will be apparent in real world performance if you compare side by side the iphone 5 and ipad 3 loading speeds of apps, as well as geek bench, browser mark, and sunspider.

The A5X didn't "double" performance from the A5, I doubt the A6X is going to be any faster than the A6 as the iPad has a much larger more detailed screen to deal with. X designation seems to indicate an extra GPU to power the retina display rather than any real world performance improvement.

The A6 is a monstrous processor out performing even quad cores. (though the amount of cores doesn't necessarily mean quicker rather more cores means better multitasking).

That being said because Apple decided to put most devices with the A5 processor I don't think there is going to be many apps out there that are going to take full advantage of the A6 because they have to remain compatible with other devices.

If there is one good thing about the 3rd gen is that it is still in-line with this years products.

Yes its always nice to have the fastest processor on the block but as we all know by next year there will be a bigger and better boy on the block.

All in all I really think the A6 is not going to have as big of a impact as some people who purchased 3rd gens think. I bet 90% of individuals wouldn't even notice a difference..with one exception..gaming.

I was not looking at benchmarks I was checking out videos where someone presses an app on both the ipad 3 and iphone 5, or someone loads the same page at the same time.

^ THAT regarding gaming.

i fall within the unofficial 30 day exchange period for people who purchased an iPad 3 and would like to upgrade to the iPad 4.

i am definitely going to take advantage of the upgrade because the A5X is insufficient at maintaining the same fluidity as the iPad 2 while playing games. the iPad 3 with the A5X hiccups during Metal Storm and the smoke trails are not smooth - they chop and skip as they expand outwards. my iPad 2 never did this. my iPad 3 also hiccups when scrolling in the iTunes Trailer App and hiccups while scrolling on a website with intensive graphics/live-media. the iPad 2 never did this and Apple thought the A5X could power the Retina which it can...but it doesn't leave much room for anything else beyond routine use. once the A5X is pushed to actually render graphics, all hell breaks loose. it handles HD video though due to the iPad's stellar ability to handle video encoding. it's an epic fail for video game graphics rendering

i expect with the A6X, the iPad 4 will return to the same level of fluidity as what made the iPad 2 such a great device.

I have both and for my real world comparisons, the iphone 5 is just faster all around with no lag in scrolling the app store, faster app loading, and quicker web browsing. Ask anyone around here and they will tell you the same thing. Don't get me wrong, the A5x is an excellent chip, but the A6x is most ideal, especially moving forward where more apps will take advantage of the faster processor.

Tablets are going to be as common as laptops soon. Every 4 months there's a new model laptop with a slightly faster processor, slightly different battery design, etc.

The ipad 4 and ipad 3 is like the difference between a core 2 duo and i3 chip. Plus microsoft is launching its surface and windows phone 8 devices in a week, so Apple wants to spoil the party by launching an "all new design, new hardware." Plus now it comes with the "wonderful and delightful" apple maps.

Edit: maybe the manufacturing quality has gone down like the iphone 5, in that case apple keeps all the extra profit and they get better quarter financial results.

cpu, camera, port, whatever. if the screen technology is actually different and all of them look "white and even" out of the box there should be riots at the apple stores.

My iPad3 wont let me watch a 1080p movie, what about the ipad4? Will it be powerfull enough to let me watch a 1080p movie on it?

Can't wait for the breakdown of the Ipad 4. Now that will be something to see and read.

They bumped to a dual-band chip which they always should have done, but the maximized marginal profits once again without the public knowing. The iPad 3 was destined for old technology, just like the iPad mini, but this new mini iPad will sell off the charts.

Your mixing up terms and confusing people.

Even the very original iPad 1 was dual-band. That just means 2.4 and 5 Ghz.

What they added to the iPhone5 and iPad4 is support for MIMO, 2 spatial streams vs 1.

I've been wondering the same thing. How exactly is the 4th gen iPad going to improve user experience over the 3rd gen with respect to performance. Everything is pretty much instantaneous as it is.

Some image heavy apps for my kids gets laggy as all hell on my 3rd gen. Not the case on my ipad 2. This must be the result of trying to run the retina screen with the same specs as the ipad 2.
So I am kind of giddy about seeing how the new chip performs in the 4th gen.

AppStore not working for you? My iPad 3 runs the AppStore perfectly fine. No lag, no glitches, nothing. I'd restore that iPad of yours if I were you... :apple:

It is always horribly laggy and unresponsive. I am shipping my ipad out tomorrow so it really isn't a big deal to me anymore. Thanks for the help, though!

I've ran Geekbench for multiple times, and I've been getting the score of 1030~1036 on my third generation iPad. It's also jailbroken and have lots of jailbreak tweaks installed. So much for the fourth generation being twice as fast.
