There's more to think about when considering the cost of an Apple Watch than, well, the cost of the Apple Watch.

Here's my own personal expectations of all the costs involved in buying an Apple Watch:

- 42mm Stainless Steel Apple Watch with Leather Loop: £599

- AppleCare+: £50 (approximate)

- White sports strap: £39

- 2m additional charger: £29

Total: £717 - an extra £118 over the price of just the watch.

And that's not even including other accessories like stands and portable chargers.

What does everyone else's total cost come to!?

That's not totally correct. The 42mm stainless steel model with the leather loop is £599. Also we still have no idea how much Apple Care or Apple Care Plus is going to cost.

Oops yes good spot thanks, corrected.

Black SS 42mm - $1100
Blue Leather Loop - $150
NOMAD Stand - $47.00
2m Charging Cable - $49
AppleCare+ $80

Total ~$1,430

Expected total cost of ownership for me:

38mm Sport $349
6% sales tax $ 21
Walk out cost $370

Less resale proceeds
after 1 year $175

Out of pocket cost $195

No plans on buying extra bands or accessories. Tax figure rounded to nearest $.

42mm Sport $400

Approximately $175 resale value.

$225 amortized for 365 days is 62¢ a day. :eek::D

EDIT: Chupa bet me to it.

In canada,
42mm SS Milanese $919

2 bands (black and white) $138

Taxes $137.41

Total $1,194.41

Wow!

Before the SS prices were announced I had budgeted $800. Lol!

I'm not sure if I would build that into total cost of ownership. No one is forcing you to buy those accessories, nor are they required to use the watch.

SS with white band
$599

Beat Powerboat 2 (White)
$199

Total cost = $798

I won't sell it. :D

It is wise to look at the total amount you will spend. Apple wants you to think that the price is $349, and many here believe it. Look at what everyone is planning on spending. It happens all the time, you go to the store planning to spend $549 for a stainless model, then you buy a charger, AppleCare, and a band or two and just like that you are as much as 30%, 40%, 50% more than what you walked in thinking about spending. You should always plan ahead what you are going to buy so you know exactly what you will be spending. It's one way of keeping yourself out of financial trouble.

EDIT: On another note, I know there are only a few here posting, but holy cow! If anyone wondered why Apple is making the watch, just look at what people are paying. It probably costs Apple less than $20 more (maybe even less) to produce the stainless over the Sports. So, someone spending $1200 for everything is netting Apple probably an extra $700-$800 pure profit!

AW with a leather loop band, $699
Additional Sport band, $49
Tax (9.2%), $68.82
--------------------------
Grand total, $816.82

It does seem like a lot when you look at it all totaled together. And I'm pretty sure I won't get AC+ since I'll probably update when the next generation is released.

42mm Stainless Steel watch with black sport band - £519

Blue leather loop - £129

2M charge cable - £29

Apple Care Plus - £50 ( approximate )

Total cost of ownership - £727.

Does anyone know how much power the 5W charger draws when charging? (If you really want to nerd out a real total cost of ownership...?

Well, if this really was worth bumping the thread...

Maybe guess that it takes an hour a day to top off the AW's battery...

... so is that 5 watt-hours per day (that is, if it draws the full 5 watts from the charger)?

And that'll be less than 2 kW per year, right?

You'd spend more money lighting your bathroom.

The answer is right there. For every minute on the charger it draws 5Wm and every hour it draws 5Wh. Electricity is priced by the kWh and averages about 12¢ per kWh. So if you charge your :apple:Watch 2 hours a day in a year it will use 3600Wh or 3.6kWh a year. So that would be about 12x3.6=43.2¢ per year.

EDIT: Left out the 5Wh in my calculation. This is corrected.

I would hold off on buying any additional Apple bands as the new AW3 will be a new form factor and they might not fit.

That rumor was derived from Gruber, who foolishly Makes outlandish claims at times. And actually he restated The rumor was not entirely accurate about the form factor changing.

And Apple wouldn't change the band port yet. They know they have so much invested into the band design and overall profit. And mark up prices. Changing the band port design would be a horrible business decision in the early stages of the Apple Watch yet and I have every reason to believe it will still remain the same for Series 3, whenever it launches.

If they changed the bands I’d be so ****ed, I’ve invested hundreds(!) in Apple Watch bands

I highly doubt Apple would change the band port. At least not anytime soon. They know they executed it perfectly and there's a huge profit margin with the bands. That would be a poor business practice to do so at this point.

Yes I think Apple has a real winner that is very valuable and is a known to be a superior system over all other watch bands. Doesn't seem likely to abandon it anytime soon.

No kidding. I’ve got more in watch bands than the SS watch cost.

So do I!

It makes no sense to change it. The only thing that would force them to change would be going to a round model, which I do not (and hope not) think will happen. If they were to change it, they would introduce so many unnecessary reactions in the market. One, people like myself would immediately buy a Series 2 on clearance. Two, the people willing to invest in the very high margin accessories would dry up. And lastly, they may lose a not insignificant number of customers in general. This isn't switching a cable port. The amount of money invested in cables is nothing next to watch bands.
