Its really weird. I can use any other program from mac office 08, but excel crashes everytime. Is there a way to erase a "history" in excel ?

It seems that its trying to open a certain file, no matter which one I chose (the initial file that i opened when this problem first appeared)

I'm stuck using numbers for the time being, and its really slowing me down..

Yep, the call stack in your crash log shows you crashing while loading auto-recovered files (aka the files you had open when excel last crashed). To clear out this cache, you can either edit or delete a particular preference file. Deleting it is easiest, but will also delete some of your other prefs as well, so you may want to try to edit it if you have the right tools.

the file in question is /USers/[YOURUSERNAME]/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.office.plist. If you just delete it and relaunch Excel, it should open cleanly. If you want to edit it, open the file in a property list editor and delete any line who's key contains "DocumentRecovery" in it.

Separately, is there any chance you can send me the file? The crash log doesn't make a lot of sense near the end, and may indicate some problem in the OS. I'd like to take a look and see if we can reproduce the crash in-house.

ok so I deleted the file like u said..........relaunched excel, nothing has changed, crashed and shuts down immediatly.

Over the past few days I had encountered the same error message on my MBPro. Found what fixed my issue here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/689544/

In short, I am using dual monitors and had moved the floating Excel formula bar to the second monitor. When I closed Excel, my preferences stored this setup - upon opening Excel again, my formula bar could not be opened on the second monitor b/c I was not connected to it, and I repeatedly received the error until I opened Excel with the second monitor active. The formula bar popped up on that monitor and Excel opened without issue.

I moved it to my MBP, no issues since, just need to remember to either stay connected to the second monitor or move the formula bar back to the MBP before closing.

I was never able to fix the problem, I never understood it.

Fortunetly or unfortunetly, shortly after it started, my house was broken into and my laptop was among many things taken. So I simply got a new one through insurance (unibody )

I haven't encoutered the problem since, however, its very possible it was the same thing as you, I used to multitask my payroll on 2 screens. thanks for the info

this fix saved me as I am currently with out access to another monitor to move the formula bar back to the macbook screen and I really need to use excel.

This fix helped get me back up and running

Excel, everyonce in a while will just start crashing and on Open or in the middle of an edit to a spreadsheet.

This worked for me

Double click harddrive, double click users, double click your name, double click Library, double click preferences, scroll down and delete the file named com.microsoft.excel.plist

When you relaunch Excel it'll create a new plist file.

Thank you for this post! I can confirm that this was indeed also the correct solution for Word 2011 (using the Zotero floating toolbar in second monitor) constantly crashing after disconnecting from my external monitor. Just reconnected to the monitor, moved the Zotero toolbar back to the laptop, problem solved! Happy days!
