I am a relatively new user of Final Cut Express 3.5.1 and - to make matters worse - recently added a Sony HD MiniDV camera to our arsenal.
When I capture and attempt to edit video from the HD camera, the entire video clip (or clips) needs to be rendered. Often. When I slide a clip around or move it, it need to be rendered. Needless to say, long projects take several hours simply rendering what's in the timeline.
Any footage I shoot with the older cam (it's Digital 8/DV format) doesn't need any rendering, other than transitions or effects as expected.

Is it something I'm doing or is this simply how Final Cut Express handles HD?
I capture my HD footage using 'Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50'.
I capture my regular DV footage using 'Firewire Basic'.

    Anybody have any ideas?

I'm tearing my hair out, so any help would be most appreciated.

I am a new user to FCE 4 (first version I've purchased) so i do not know anything about earlier versions. I don't know if you're up to spend some more money, but i'd go ahead and updrade to FCE 4. It handles HD much better and with less rendering. Especially with the latest update that handles full 1080i more easily.
I think you can get the upgrade for cheaper as well.
