Exchange email on iPhone

    So I'm pretty sure my school uses Microsoft Exchange Server (which apparently doesn't work with iPhone Mail client). However, I decided to try to set up my account under the IMAP4 settings for ***** n' giggles and see what happened.

    I receive mail just fine, however I can't send anything, it gives me outgoing server errors. Is that the limitation of Exchange on the iPhone, or am I not supposed to be getting any email period? :confused::confused:

    Just curious.

    Your school has imap access enabled to their exchange server. You need a pop3 server for sending mail.

    Ok, it sounds like you have gotten the first few steps right. You need to set it up to recieve email from Exchange on IMAP. As far as sending emails, you need to set up SMTP on something other than port 25. AT&T and most ISPs block port 25. Most organizations have secure SMTP, which either runs on 587 or 465, depending on what the admin chooses. Those will go through great. That is what we use for our iPhone users.

    There are other problems with Exchange and the iPhone. The IMAP used in exchange does not delete emails until the EXPUNGE command is issued. The iPhone does not issue this command. So, there are two things you can do. 1, you can move messages to the trash instead of deleting them. 2, you can convince your admin to install the iPhone expunger service (google it). Since you probably won't get your admin to the the latter, you are stuck with the former.
