So if the new iMacs don't come out soon, I'll be getting a refurb. Now my question is about the keyboard. Is it possible to get a bigger keyboard with number pad instead of the smaller ones? I know you can edit it in the cart
on a new mac, but you can't on refurb.

Any chance that you can take it to the Apple Store and get the small keyboard exchanged with the larger one?

There's always a chance, though a slim one...

Better off selling your brand new keyboard on eBay and then buying the one you want

Are you also looking to exchange for a new one because your 'y' key is broken?

Unfortunately, as far as I've been able to find out, the proper number-pad keyboard is only available as either a "Build To Order" option or as a separate purchase. I asked at what is the closest thing New Zealand has to an Apple Store (run by the official Apple distributor) and was told they could sell me an iMac with the proper keyboard, but only buy specially ordering it - they can't just swap it in-store. :(

If and when new iMacs are released, it looks like we'll still be stuck with the silly little keyboard as standard. Apple should turn this around and ship the proper keyboard with iMacs and Mac Pros, with the silly little one as the optional version, and give reseller stores the ability to swap them over ... or simply drop the price and sell them without a keyboard (as with the Mac Mini) and let the buyer choose what they want as a separate purchase, maybe making it slightly cheaper if buying an Apple keyboard at the same time as the computer.

If I get a new iMac I want a proper keyboard and not those laptop ones...

Why do the use laptop keyboards in desktop computers?

The only reason I can see is that it's (slightly) cheaper for Apple - the silly tiny keyboard uses a smaller aluminium case, a small circuit board, and less plastic keys. Plus of course those who want the proper keybopard then have to pay extra to get it (unless they order via Apple's online store or a special order through a reseller).
