I could use some quick advice -

My first iPad 3 was returned on Sunday due to a yellow smudge and noticeably darker display. (iPad 2s were brighter). I swapped colors and made a purchase from the local Apple store.

Replacement, to me, is perfect in terms of screen brightness and resolution. I prefer it to my buddy's iPad 3, which seems warmer. It's slightly warmer than a display unit but doesn't bother me a bit. Last night I did find that in watching dark movies in a dark room, there's moderate screen bleeding in the upper left corner. It's noticeable if I look for it.

Genius Bar appointment set up for 2 hea from now. I paid a lot of money and want a solid product but recognize I also want an iPad in this first batch and that many displays are having issues. I assume they will not let me keep opening boxes until I find one that has the same great cool screen, and want the option to keep my old one if that is the case.

Suggestions? What should I expect?

Suggestion is for you to make up your mind because there's no guarantee that the box you open will be any better than the one in your hand now. It'll make easier the jobs of the people working there, plus yourself.

Find a sympathetic genius or manager who will open one or two other ones to compare and let you exchange if you prefer.

Be careful that you don't wear out your welcome at the Apple store. At some point they will say "Ok, but this is the last time." At that point you are pretty much screwed.

Thanks - if they guaranteed that I would eventually get one I am happy with I didn't want to settle with the leaking but if I would risk losing this one for a roll of the dice I would learn to live with it.

Exactly. I will let them know it is perfect other than the bleeding and if they consider that acceptable and ask for their input.
