is it standard procedure to restore your phone as new (wiping all data) when you take it in for an exchange? then restore the exchange unit with your backup?

If I had to take my phone in for anything, I would attempt to do a restore as new. Just to make sure no data is on it.
But it begs to question, if you're able to wipe it clean successfully with no problems, what would you be taking it in for? Buttons or screen issues? 🙂

I know this is a weird question, but I dropped my phone and cracked the back today too, and was wondering if the back they use to replace it is brand new or "refurbished". If the latter, does it at least look new? Or might there be signs of use on it?
