This may become an inconic example of augmented reality tech. Awesome to scan your room and see a virtual ballon with a virtual string attached to your car keys.

As long as there's not a scary virtual clown holding the balloon ...

I think people are expecting too much from these tags. They only work if there’s an iPhone nearby that’s tracking tags. It‘s not like “find my phone” that can track down a connected phone over any distance.

OK for finding lost keys at home, not so good for finding your luggage that has gone astray.

It should work like tile (like Apple described in the macOS and iOS announcement) where any tag can be located by any iPhone.

Galaxy Watch does this. No special hardware needed, just vibrate and show an icon when the bluetooth connection is lost.
It’s something so simple. I don’t get why Apple hasn’t done this. 😒

Finding my iPhone in my house by pinging it is the most used feature of my Apple Watch by a large margin.
Oh, same here. I have this bizarre comforter that seems to swallow up things like it’s the Bermuda Triangle so I’m constantly losing my phone while I’m in bed. The ping always comes to my rescue. A shame I can’t do the same for my remote.

I wonder if this will only work with new iPhones with the u1 chip. Hopefully every iPhone works, I’d love to tag my camera gear with it.

There was plenty of time to add features. Every iOS had new features.
Except of course that iOS12 was so stable because they pushed off a good number of features to next year, ie, iOS 13 (to explicitly focus on speed and stability). This time they didn't do so and implemented most if not all the features they put off last year plus additional new features.

It is hard to see putting off features to next year to focus on stability and getting a very stable OS, and implementing features from last year plus additional new features and getting a less stable OS to just be a coincidence.

As someone who just spent ~2 weeks trying to track down my daughter's Apple Pencil...

Please include this functionality in the Apple Pencil 3, Apple! 😬

Is this just for items of close proximity that you misplace in your house? Or can you attach them to your car, motorcycle or bicycle & track them over long distances if they get stolen? The former is not useful to me, but the latter definitely is.

I’ll attach these to my kids water bottles, lunch boxes, sweaters, hats and persons.
I am so here for these trackers. The Tile ones are OK, but it was either replace them after a year (the hell?) or finally the new ones have replaceable batteries -- that last for a few months. Beats those Trackr ones I used that killed batteries in a month, but these sound like a big improvement.

Been using Tiles for years now and to be a big advance on the competition Apple needs to do several things. The software innovations and ultra wideband bluetooth sound great, but:
  • Cost of Tiles is too great to attach to many things like "kids water bottles, lunch boxes, sweaters, hats". The Apple devices need to come in at a much lower price.
  • I use a Slim Tile in my wallet, but even the Slim version is a bit thick for that. Something no thicker than a credit card would be so much better.
  • Battery life is certainly an issue, as mentioned above. Charge needs to last at least a year.
  • Those of us who are getting older and tending to lose keys, wallets, etc often have loss of hearing at higher frequencies. The Tile alert frequencies are in that range and that makes them harder to find.
  • The volume is also a problem when the device is inside a wallet, a briefcase, or keys are underneath say a sweater. the AR idea with balloons sounds like a great way to overcome that issue.

Okay but why the heck does my watch not notify me when I leave my phone behind? This is the one feature I can’t believe is still missing after all these years.
It does...visually. But yes, a notification tap or ding would be very welcome.

apples Version will be way more effective due to the sheer scale of devices they have out there. With tile you had to have someone running the tile app with Bluetooth on walk near a device to tag it as found. If this is built into iOS 13 that’s orders of magnitude more people and a much, much higher chance your item will be located

Someone could be fired here for the leak..

Lol, that was my first thought, as well. Hopefully they walked far enough away from their cubicle glass box standing desk before taking the screenshot.

Semi unrelated, but I wonder if Apple has any type of steganography embedded in their internal builds to catch leakers. One of the coolest examples I’ve seen of a company doing that was with the Xbox 360 dashboard where no one knew until recently that pulsing rings in the bottom of the screen was actually pulsing in a manner that broadcast the console’s serial number so that they could catch leakers. Here’s some guy’s Youtube video explaining it since the Twitter post from the ex-MS employee who explained it got deleted.

Will be great for integrating with my home automation system. All sorts of possibilities there.

And even more outside of HA. Those with imagination will find interesting uses.

‘there are quite a lot of iPhones out There. Assuming you lose something in a relatively populated area this could be a really effective tool to help find it.

What’s the chances Apple will make the tags with none replaceable/chargeable batteries which need to be replaced every year like the original “Tiles”. Milking the apple community even more.
Someone like Elon would make it wireless charging as well as solar 😜

The chances are quite low...
