10.6.5 Snow Leopard can nativly read/write ExFAT file system. So, I've formatted my 1.5 TB external HDD using it. Mac can read/write it without any problems, but strangely Windows 7 can't recognize it. After googling a bit I've found out that I should format HDD in Windows 7, not Mac OS (http://www.timothevs.net/2010/11/11/10-6-5-brings-exfat-makes-sharing-files-between-osx-and-windows-easier/ ). In that case Win 7 and SL both could read/write ExFAT.

Apparently 10.6.5 has some bugs in ExFAT format procedure that prevent Win 7 from recognizing this file system. Is there any solution apart from formatting HDD in Windows 7?

Thanks for quick reply. Well, I'll format it again, using windows 7 this time.

I've posted this in many threads:

exFAT (FAT64)
  • Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
  • exFAT partitions created with OS X 10.6.5 are inaccessible from Windows 7
  • Not all Windows versions support exFAT. See disadvantages.
  • exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
  • Maximum file size: 16 EiB
  • Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
