I don't know about the OP pricing but I could see them cutting out the 16GB model and making the 32GB model the base and going with the pricing he has in his post. People will say wow I'm getting more machine for the price of the 16GB model. It's a mind game just like they say about pricing something at $_99.99 vs $_00.00 it makes people think they're getting a deal.

Apple may even start viewing the iPad as a lost leader of sorts even though I still think they would make money on each device but start trying to push or move people to cloud based services and other fee type deals for iPad devices and make their money that way instead of on the hardware.

Yeah, but be fair, if you look back at that time, most people were expecting some OSX type of tablet device, not what ended up being released.

If it WAS a full OSX device then I'd expect the price to be towards the $1000 area.

True enough.

Could happen.

I think the most likely scenario is Apple releases the new iPad and the base model has 32GB at the same price as today's 16GB ($499). The 1st gen iPad is retired, and pricing goes up from there.

The most probable things to happen-

1. Front facing VGA camera. Most probably there won't be a rear camera.
2. 512MB RAM. Don't think they'll update CPU clocks or change it.
3. Some tweaks in iOS.
4. Don't think they'll use a standard USB port. They oppose non-standard things like Flash and don't even provide consumers an option to use it but their own port is a non-standard one.

Realistic pricing-

WiFi

16GB - 429$
32GB - 499$
64GB - 599$

This pricing idea is basically like the current iPod Touch pricing. Don't think they'll introduce a 128GB either. They always want us to wait for the next generation else most of them won't buy (Best example for this would be 256MB RAM in iPad and iPod Touch 4G).

WiFi + 3G

16GB - 579$
32GB - 679$
64GB - 779$

This pricing doesn't seem realistic because Apple simply doesn't know to make things cheap. And moreover competitors' products are expensive and nowhere close to iPad. Even if Apple charges 100$ more it'll sell because there's no competition for iPad:apple:

Why does everyone seem to think Apple will keep the first iPad around when the second one launches? This isn't an iPhone. It's more similar to the iPod, which they've never kept the old models around while releasing a new one. I just don't see it happening. What would be the point? All speculation is the iPad 2 will be a relatively minor upgrade anyways.

Well they did keep the 2nd Gen iPod Touch around at a lower price point when the 3rd Gen was released-

I do agree with the fact that like any other company, Apple loves profits. Buy doesn't the $499 iPad only cost ~ $250 in parts to make?

Let's apply the same isuppli BOM estimates to other somewhat similar products, mostly smartphones, but includes the Galaxy Tab

iPad wifi - component cost $260 / initial price $500

Galaxy Tab - $205 / $600

Google Nexus - $174 / $530

HTC Droid Incredible - $163 / $530

iPhone 4 - $187 / $600

The iPad has sold very well, an understatement, and as you can see above, in comparison with other products Apple has priced it aggressively for a supposed "niche" device. Apple could of course lower the iPad price, but it's questionable if they have a lot to gain from lowering the price. Of course I'd personally welcome it if they lower it, but I doubt it'll happen.

I agree completely.

I'm sure apple will create a magical device that will amaze humanity, along with solving global warming and providing an end to world hunger

I would not be surprised if the prices stay the same for iPad 2, but we see the 16GB iPad 1 hang around at a reduced price.

Just like apple did with the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Possibly even like the 3GS it might be in a previously unseen 8GB version. Though I would think that 8GB might be widely considered too little for a tablet device.

I just can't see Apple wanting to muddy the waters by having different generation iPads for sale in it's stores.

All day every day the salespeople will be having to explain the differences to customers who don't follow IT news.

Personally, and I know it's been said not, if they wanted to offer a cheaper version I think they would be better to offer say a 7" version, same screen res etc, but just 7" and say $150 less.

Maybe the 1st Gen would be sold online while the B&M stores sold the Gen 2.

I wish they would offer a 7" device but we won't go there in this thread:D

Apple would not want cheaper iPad1 sales damaging higher priced iPad2 sales would they.

The day the 2nd gen comes out there will be no 1st Gen on the shelves anywhere. Period.

I'm bringing this thread back up to the top because now more than ever I think the next iPad will have some sort of price reduction. I think and hope that Apple will "move in for the kill" using price as their lever. Especially since the reaction to other tablets like the Xoom has generally been "great technical features, but the price is too high", even from many staunch Android fans. Apple can twist the knife even more if they can lower the price somewhat with the next iPad.

Apple are the only company who can truly reliably predict that they will actually sell many millions of new iPad tablets to consumers in 2011, so they can price accordingly.

Possibly similar to MacMini price increase

I think it depends on just how much of an improvement we see with iPad2. If it is the minimal improvements that have been discussed above (slight RAM and CPU bump, cameras and lighter/thinner design) I think we will see the price stay the same with the iPad1 16GB possibly sticking around at a lower price point.

If we see more of an improvement than what has been listed above (inclusion of mini-display port, SD card slot and more than a slight RAM and CPU bump) I think the iPad2 will see a price increase with the iPad1 16&32 GB more likely to stick around at lower price points. There are a growing number of consumers interested in performance and apple could use this model to cover both ends of the market.

The price increase if substantial improvements were made would be similar to when apple released the new redesigned MacMini at a higher price point than the previous generation.

I obviously have no idea what will happen (like so many of us posting on this thread)... these are just thoughts on the matter... I am happy with my iPad at the moment and will be waiting to see what apple has to say about the iPad2 (hopefully sometime soon) before I decide if I will be getting the new one...
But if they make substantial additions to iOS (adding a finder app similar to OSX finder with a universal file system or something) that needs the performance boost than I will be in the que on opening day again=)

The only thing on this though is Apple positions themselves as a premium brand, differentiating from others in terms of user experience. They've not typically to my knowledge competed on price. That doesn't mean they might not kick it down a notch as you suggest, but the focus isn't typically on price competitiveness.

I doubt they will raise the upcharge for the 3G model and I doubt they will have variable pricing for the upcharge. Currently it's $129 across the board

I expect some of the rumors, which actually have downplayed any big update. That means I have much more chances to be amazed, since I wouldn't expect it.

I'm with Dwalls90, I think there will be a pretty significant price reduction for iPad 2, similar to how the original iPhone got a lot cheaper in its second iteration.

Now that all the competitors are coming out and trying to match Apple's current iPad prices, Apple will undercut them.

it wasnt cheaper though was it? It was subsidized with a 2 year contract...the first iphone was not. Same price w/o contract

oops sorry dohnny jepp -= didnt see the second page of this thread

iPad v2 will see a $130.us price drop: base prices will remain the same, but 3G will no longer be optional (wi-fi-only models discontinued to simplify the product line). The only way there will be six models is if they offer a choice of cell format.

So you're saying a 16GB WiF/3G iPad2 for $499? That would be hard to believe but if true. I had planned on researching other tablets after they hit the market but at that price it would be hard to turn down especially when knowing it already has the apps I'd need.

As long as the data plan is pay as you go. I'd probably get a Verizon one only because I don't travel outside of the US and their 3G coverage but 99% of the time I plan on using my iP4 and MyWi for data and only activate a month worth of data for special reasons

You've got to be kidding. Amazed, no way. Between the hype and rumors, it's just another Apple product.
