I want to discuss which models hold their value the most over a year.

For some background (please skip if tl;dr) I wanted to wait until the 2020 refresh but just couldn't cos my iPhone 6 was really too long in the tooth. I bought both an 11 and a 5.8 11 Pro to decide between. I went with this generation because I do need a decent camera while my kids are still young and can't always borrow my wife's XS.

Anyway I still plan to get a 2020 refresh as there are things I just don't enjoy about this generation.

Which model will keep more value (depreciate less) between now and the 2020 model release? I have a 256GB pro but thinking about getting a 64GB instead thinking that this will depreciate slightly less than a 256. Otherwise I will stick with the iPhone 11 if that will likely lose less value?

Please help.

Not sure about 11 pro vs 11, but the 64gb ones seem to sell faster. It seems like most people looking for a used phone just want to save money and are less interested in paying extra for storage.

What about Pro vs Pro Max?

In actual currency, no question the Pro will have less depreciation, because it's cheaper. Less cost at the start means less currency to lose at the end. This is especially true for the original question, the iPhone 11 will have less total currency depreciation versus an 11 Pro.

Concerning the depreciation curve between Pro and Pro Max, you won't definitvely know until there's data, i.e. resale/market values of both. An educated guess is the Pro Max will have a steeper depreciation curve. Just as in automobiles, the more expensive the unit, the steeper the loss. Anecdotally, review Apple's refurbished marketplace, or some of the Apple product resale websites. The fastest products to sell unquestionably are the the cheapest versions of the product, meaning lowest memory, slowest processors, non-pro versions. Base versions invariably have lower prices, and thus are quickly snapped up in the used resale market, sometimes within a minute or two of being listed.

If one is buying used/refurbished, the ultimate driver is price. Condition comes next. Anything else (like memory) is mere gravy if it can be purchased cheaply.

I'm expecting to get over $700 for my 64gb 11 Pro. I sold my 256gb XS for over $800. If you third party sell you can get the newest phone every year for around $300. Beats any upgrade program by a massive margin. You will lose more with anything more expensive than the base model, but obviously if you need the memory you need the memory. I went 64gb this round just to minimize my losses (and I can make it work with iCloud). For example I'd guess you'd be able to get around $75 more for the 256gb option compared to the 64gb. So that upgrade is actually costing you $75 overall. I think the depreciation between the Pro and the 11 will be pretty similar, but if I had to guess I'd say the standard 11 will lose less overall.
