I feel like my question is the most common and redundant of any on here, but I'm trying to set up my Mail account for OS X, and its not working. I've done all the play by plays that I've seen so far, but I dont understand IMAP POP and all this other stuff. I have an excite.com account, and it didnt get a PING, while my yahoo account did, but neither of them are working. They just say they're opening the inbox, and nothing else happens. I hope a mac genious takes a moment to shine some light on this ignorant fool. At least give me a helpful link. Thanks.

Does either account offer free IMAP or POP service to you? In the US, Yahoo does not offer free POP / IMAP service -- you need to have their premium service level to get it. It seems to be different in the UK, but at least here in the US, it isn't a default feature. I don't know anything about Excite e-mail... I thought Excite had folded!

Since neither of them are working I would assume that neither of them allow you to have POP mail.

Gmail is the best free email service provider I've seen. In fact I have seen paid email service providers that are much worse than Gmail. I would definitely recommend it. And yes Gmail supports POP mail as well as giving you a gigantic amount of email storage space, over 2.4 Gigabytes .
