EXPORT Address Book contacts to Excel?

I searched and searched, I downloaded shareware solutions, I tried what Apple recommended on their own website, and finally found the easiest way to overcome this problem by thinking like a MAC user, not a PC user.

Remember that Excel is made by MICROSOFT. So, use your MAC software to create what you need (for me, I needed an Excel file of my contacts as the service I use for email marketing requires this for uploading):

1. Open Mac's Numbers software program.
2. Open Address Book, and click on the group or selection of contacts you need exported.
3. Drag them into an empty spreadsheet into Numbers.
4. If needed, re-save your new Numbers file while in Excel.

Seriously, it is that simple. NO export, NO import, NO headaches.

Is there anyway to reverse this process? I have a numbers spreadsheet with lot's of information in it (names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, etc), is there a way to import that information into my contacts on my iMac? I appreciate any help I may receive.

Addresses didn't import

Followed the advice to drag and drop the contacts onto a blank Numbers spreadsheet. Seemed to work great until I noticed that the addresses weren't copied onto the spreadsheet. Names, phones, & emails came thru fine.

I still can't get this to work. I highlight some names in Address Book and drag them to an open empty file in Numbers, but a circle with a line through it pops up and then when I release the mouse, the names just fly back to Address Book. What else do I need to do?

One Small Problem

This works really well except for one thing I can't seem to figure out. I've unhidden all columns and I still can't get numbers that I have labeled as "iPhone" in address book. I've tried making a custom column in numbers called iPhone, but that still doesn't work. If I go back into address book and change the "iPhone" label to "mobile" then the number shows up on the spreadsheet. I don't really want to go through all 500 contacts and do this. Any help out there???

Hola! So, I'm hoping that you can help me out too. I don't have Numbers and would like to export from my address book to Excel or another file (I think a txt file would work) where I can separate the first name, last name and email address. Ultimately, I would like to import them into MailChimp.

Sure... but you can also edit it in Entourage once you've got the info in there. Why not just organize your contacts in Entourage?

I'm not sure that Excel can directly import data from the Office Address Book... At least, I haven't done it and I just checked and see no command for that.

Entourage will export a tab-delineated text file that Excel can import. You can then make your edits, save and use Word to do the mail-merge as it would from any other Excel worksheet.

This is easy and I do it all the time:

Download that which will export your address book to a .txt file. Then simply open in Excel and your good to go!

Hello , I have same problem and I did downloaded this program ABE but it doesnt open ! Whenever I open it some message appear says POWER PC IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED! Pls if u know why just tell me.

worked! now what about...

I've added some custom fields in my Apple Address Book. When I drop contacts onto/into Numbers those fields are not coming along with the others.

I've unhidden columns.

ideas? advice? commiseration?

Still issues with dragging to numbers

Great suggestion in dragging from Address Book to Numbers.

However, it only seems to work from the 'On My Mac' section of the Address Book.

When trying to drag from 'Public Folders' however, it won't work.

Anybody have any idea why? Or how to fix? Doesn't make any sense to me.

One other method is to sync your Address Book contacts with GMail contacts. GMail lets you export a .csv file from your contacts, and the .csv will import into lots of things.

Where is Numbers? Does this come automatically on Macs as I am not finding it on ours. Is it a program you have to buy?
