Nice solution

nobody mentioned anything about the app "bump"? it works pretty easy, and it's free. i transferred all my contacts and pictures from my iphone to the ipad using this app, worked flawlessly.

Kind of an old post this but very useful for me. My iPhone is linked to my iMac at home and was recently given an iPad at work which is linked to a work machine (also mac :)). The free bump app allowed me to painlesslly transfer all phone contacts without me moving from the sofa.

I did it all wrong

Well, some of it anyway,

When I received my iPad and sync'd it to iTunes I selected to sync it independently- so it didn't have the iPhone files that I wanted it to have. I thought I could find a simple way to move the apps and files I wanted after I did this, but it's turned out to be more complex than I'd anticipated.
Most of the threads I've read about similar topics on how to solve my contact list issues assume that I have a good understanding of how iTunes works....and apparently my gaffs while fumbling with the iTunes UI have left me short of what I want. For some things I find that iTunes problem solving like this are not instinctual.
I currently have several apps and files that I wish to keep separate from each of the devices- each of the devices have different purposes- one more for communication and one more for browsing with each having the limited ability to do both of what's left in my apps pile. So, instead of syncing the entire contents of my phone to my pad, how do I do it while being selective on what to share? How do I preserve what's on both so nothing gets lost on either device as I find my way through this?

Thanks in advance for any help :p

Don't buy any apps - this is exactly the sort of nonsense that the whole apple ecosystem is supposed to cut out.

Check here for the relevant support article on the apple website - all syncing happens through itunes on both mac and pc and does not require mobileme.

Instant syncing over the air is where mobileme comes in, although you can get a similar service with a little research using gmail and/or exchange.

There may be complexities involved for some of us, to the point where I HAD to buy MS Office 2011 for the mac (UGH!).

For instance, address book does not recognize outlook categories fully (could be an issue with Good Mobile Messaging for Enterprise, not sure), so segmenting some contacts from others over multiple devices is problematic. Also, not every field may perfectly sync between outlook(PC) and address book.

I just use gmail exchange. I have gmail anyway, it's free and it syncs to all my idevices. It even synced to my android when I was on android for 10 days (and returned it).

I want to someone who successfully transfer contacts from iPhone to iPad without iTunes. because I have not installed iTunes on my computer.

As stated, this thread is now useless. Just sign into iCloud on the iPad with the same account from your iPhone and your contacts will be on the iPad too.

If you search the app store for "vcard" there are some free apps that will export your contacts to a standard vcard format address file then you can just email that file to your iPad and open it and that will import the contacts.

All I did was go to iCloud on the iPhone and turn on contacts and calendars and all information from one device (iPad, iPhone and Macbook pro) automatically syncs to the others.

actually you wouldn't even have to do that. if you use 'share contact' it will let you message or even email any contact as a v card. tap it on the other end and you can create a contact out of it.

That is assuming you can't just use iCloud or similar

Yes, but you would have to do that for every single contact one at a time. If you have 75 contacts, you would have to do what you described 75 times. Using one of the apps I mentioned gets you one vcard file with all 75 contacts in it. Much easier.
