Extended display problem

I connected my imac 21" to an external 20" monitor via Minidisplayport-to-VGA adapter. Picture quality is not good; I see dim vertical lines on the screen. Resolution is set to monitor's native resolution.
Any idea how to fix this?

Try a different cable, and make sure the plugs are pushed into the socket fully.
