I have a Macbook Pro 10.8.5 and have lots of word processing to do with multiple documents. I want to extend screen space and use my 23" insignia tv. I can hook them up and get my macbook display onto the tv, but I want to use both screens with one mouse/keyboard. I looked in Display options and there was nothing for extending screen space. Thanks.

Turn off Mirroring.

Done.

Mavericks and Yosemite have far better support when it comes to extending desktops. Spaces arrangement are kept separate from each display. For instance, Display 1 can have 4 spaces, while Display 2 can have 3 spaces.
