I currently have AEBS set up in dusl band mode serving 802.11n on both 2.4 and 5ghz

The problem is that since updating to Lion, my MBP struggles getting signal in my bedroom. My iPad2 doesnt have any problems though strangely enough

Anyway I have been thinking of buying a cheap wireless router for the bedroom. I basically want to set it up as a wireless range extender

If I bought another brand like Belkin, would this be compatible with my AEBS?

Also will Airport utility recognise it so it can be setup or is this purely for Apple products?

Yes, it would. As long as you make sure the SSID (the name of the wireless network), the encryption and the password are the same.

Airport Utility will not help you.
