I bought a USB extension cord and it says it will not charge my phone (and it doesn't). What did I do wrong?

You bought a bad cable. (sorry, couldn't resist) 😀

A USB extension cable should work fine; I use a 3ft extension every day to extend the charge/sync cable to the powerstrip behind my desk.

How long is the cable? If not some extreme length it should work just fine barring a problem with the cable.

It is a 10 foot cable. It shows that the phone is plugged in (shows a picture of a plug, not the lightning image) but when I plugged my phone in, it just didn't charge it, when my husband plugged his iP4 in, it said something like "this device isn't compatible to charge" or something.

Not having a 10ft usb extension cable to test here to verify that length works, my best suggestion is try a different 10ft cable. If you get the same problem you may need to go to a shorter cable.
