Is running a PNY GeForce GTX 660 Ti review possible from a MacBook Pro late2013

alternatively what is the latest equivalent card

i'll need a thunderbolt 2 adaptor and a external case and a power supply

This would make a excellent home project

eGPUs exist, but plug and play eGPU solutions only work on Macs with UEFI 2.0 (Haswell and later).

And it's really expensive.

My plug and play solution is a Sonnet IIID with a GTX 780 Ti card, wired up to my rMBP via TB2.

As far as I know, I've not seen anyone wire up an AMD card successfully over TB2, plug and play.

And besides, it only works in Boot Camp (for now).

TechInferno has an area for eGPU setups over TB2. You can head over there and have a look.

Have you tried gaming with this setup? How is performance?

I did some benchmarks and found that performance was between 85-95% of its full performance. It was compared with the same card mounted in my gaming rig.

Oh wow, excellent!

Do you think they'll release fully plug-and-play external graphics cards modules in the near future?

I've had experience with building my own (gaming) PC, but if I have to get the PSU and the case I might as well drop in a CPU and a few sticks of RAM and call it a proper PC.

Nope. It's a really niche market.

People buy a Mac and just use it as it is, and not pimp it up.

Sure, you could build your own PC, but good luck trying to get OS X to work nicely on it.

By the way, the plug-and-play TB eGPU works on both Windows (UEFI) and OS X.

XFX's version of the 270X is just 8.7 inches long, so theoretically it'd fit in the Akitio case. Why do I need that riser? Not sure what it's for to be honest.

Anyone got an answer?
