My external HD backup drive suddenly can't mount and backup anymore. I've partitioned this Seagate 1TB into 2 x 500GB partition and the other partition is still able to mount but not the section that is partitioned for backup. I tried manually mounting it in disk utility, first aid, erase and to reformat the whole disc but nothing seems to work. Should I just be buying a new HD?

How old is the disk? Given the low cost of drives (2 TB for ~$70, 5 TB for ~$100) it probably isn't worth the trouble trying to figure out if it is fixable. Failures like you describe tend to indicate that it is time to replace the drive.

The disc is about 1 to 2 years old. I’m thinking that I should just buy a new one to replace too and to save the hassle. Thanks!

I would erase the entire drive, and start a new backup.
That could correct directory/driver problems with the drive.
But that's just me.
