I have a 2016 13-inch retina MacBook Pro and I am thinking of buying a battery case so I can charge it when I cannot have the laptop plugged in. It could be really useful for me.

However, my concern is that a battery case could damage my MacBook Pro's battery. I also have a Dell XPS 15, and I bought Dell's own PowerBank at a Microsoft store. The PowerBank was made by Dell and, according to the seller himself, it was designed to be used with Dell's laptops, including the XPS 15. After I used it a few times, the battery became swollen and I had to replace it.

I wonder whether this could happen to my MacBook Pro if I use a third party external battery.

Thanks.

I’ve repaired many iPhones in the past where a battery case has been used. The battery tends to fail a lot quicker, and can begin to swell.

The problem with a MacBook’s battery is when it begins to swell, it pushes up through the trackpad, causing it to bulge and ultimately crack. This certainly was the case on older models, I’m not sure if the design has changed on new models.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t go for it, but I would advise that you only use it in emergencies only, and don’t rely on it.

Hope this helps?

Thanks, it helps. Just as I thought. I will not buy one then.
