I'd like to buy an external display for my early 2008 Macbook Pro, something in the 20"-22" range. I'm tempted by Apple's 20" ACD, but maybe there are better options around for less money. Suggestions ?

Look in to samsung and dell.

Im not in the monitor scene at the moment, but i have had good experinces with both. Unless you are looking for a serious display for some pro work, i would say the Apple display is probably quite highly priced and the 20" ACD is very out of date. Expect updates soon.

For me the question is: will Apple keep some matte screen available or do we have to adapt our eyes to the glossiness ??? This is becoming an horrible trend even in the TV field, where at least I could see reasons for that, even if I don't like it. I have been to the CES 2009 in Las Vegas and no matte TV screen anywhere. The same, of course for most IT equipment :(
