I was looking forward to using external display support, but it's not working well: every few seconds the external display flickers, so it is basically unusable. It's an ASUS ProART 248 (1920x1200), and I'm connection via its DVI port. It also has DisplayPort, HDMI, and VGA ports, but the first two of those are in use, and I expect VGA would be inferior (assuming I have some adapter for it).

In the past I've used DVI port with my iMac (same Apple USB-C to DVI adapter and cable) and did not have any such issues. The DVI cable seems solidly plugged in to the monitor and adapter. So I don't think a different DVI cable would change anything.

I have Apple TV using HDMI port and use that a lot, and while I would happily re-assign it to DisplayPort, I lack the necessary adapters or cable at the moment.

So before I go and buy another adapter, I thought I would check here to see if DVI should work, and what else I might try to get it to work.

I went ahead and bought an adapter so I can plug the iPad into the DisplayPort. Hopefully that will work.

Got the DisplayPort adapter, and External Display support works with that protocol.

So far, however, I'm confused: it's running in Stage Manager mode on the external display, and with Show Dock and Recents enabled (with apparently no way to disable them). Not what I was expecting, but I guess I need to read up on what to expect.

So I figured out how to display app full screen on secondary monitor. Cool.

It's still weird that you can have Stage Manager off on the iPad, but the monitor has to have it on.

But no AirPlay when there's a second monitor, not even just for audio.

And it assumes external display has audio. The iPad's audio is disabled. I plugged some speakers into the monitor's audio (pass through) port, and it works fine, but I'd like the option to have it play through iPad's speakers. I have to adjust volume on the speakers themselves (or using the multi-level menu on the monitor), and there's no way to mute short of turning volume to zero or pausing playback.
