External drive freezing

I have a problem with my external drive freezing quite often. It also freezes finder in the process. Is there any way to take care of that process? When I restart finder, I lose my desktop, and finder still won't work. Any ideas outside of rebooting?

Verify and maybe repair your external disk in Disk Utility. If that doesn't help, would reformatting it be convenient? 🙂
