I'm looking to upgrade the HD in my PS3, preferably using an external drive.

Am I able to save game installs to the external HD, or can it only be used for movies/music etc? I only have 3 games and 3 demos installed but already I only have 17GB left...it really isn't going to be long before I'm totally out of space.

<mumbles> Stupid GT5 taking up a stupid 6GB on my stupid HDD...</mumbles>

You can't use a external drive for game installs, only for media. Just go out and buy a 160GB 2.5" SATA drive, they aren't too pricey.

I have 40 games (31 physical and 9 PSN), 1 demo (MGS online @ 1.5GB), and 1 game trailer. My 160GB drive has 88GB free now.

I have a feeling I will be upgrading to a 250GB drive sooner than later 😀

Funny...I just went out and brought myself a DualShock 3(beautiful) & a 160 HDD(going to install it now)

I think it was a good idea to allow users to replace the drives....My 60 isn't full as yet(just some demos and three PSN games which I can download again) but I rather have my huge HDD on now than later.

160 formatted in the PS3 is 149GB of usable space, just a FYI 🙂

DS3 is awesome, of course i knew this long ago 😛

250 GB drives i've seen for $99, which isn't too bad (yes, 2.5")

how do you install the PS3 software on the drive?

PS3 software is firmware stored in a chip along with all your settings (wifi, accounts, AV setting, etc), the HD is for data storage only, just swap the drive out and restore from a backup and you are done.
